Romsdalseggen was a fantastic and rewarding hike with spectacular views. What sets Romsdalseggen apart from other hikes is that you get a fantastic view throughout most of the hike since you walk on the ridgeline for quite a long time. I would definitely reccommend this hike since it gives quite a unique experince with having to climb some of the steepest parts and also the views are the best i've seen in Norway. It is, however, worth it to note that for those who are not up to doing the whole hike it is also possible to climb the first 3-4 km where you get a fantastic view and return after to the parking in Vinjedalen. It is also possible to do the opposite - hike the path leading to Rampestreken and continue on but note that it is a much steeper path. The weather conditions should be considered. An overall extremely rewarding hike but bear in mind that it is a challenging one (ca 7-8 h if you stop often for pictures as we did) with a very steep descend which can cause your legs to tremble. The descend felt quite long too.

The Romsdalen Valley

The Romsdalen valley is long and narrow with majestic towering mountains on either side. Along the valley floor in a wild and beautiful setting runs the foaming salmon river, Rauma. At Verma the Rauma runs through a 30-40 metre deep gorge, forming Slettafossen waterfall. The waterfall is secured by fences on either side and can be crossed by a bridge. At 1,000 metres, Trollveggen is Europe's tallest vertical, overhanging rock face. Scandinavian rock climbing started in the Romsdal Alps, which boast some of the world's most difficult climbs. On the opposite side of the valley, the Romsdalshorn peak towers to a height of 1,555 metres. On the E 136 road, directly below Trollveggen there is a picnic area with a tourist information office, WC, kiosk, children's play area and a marvellous view of the mountains.

I wasn’t originally going to climb up to this viewpoint as it wasn’t the best weather, however the clouds started to clear so I decided to head up and it turned out to be a great idea. It must be said that the hike up was not easy. I’m a young relatively fit male and I found the hike physically draining. It took me one hour to make it up to the viewpoint and I was not going slowly. The path was easy to follow but deceptively steep. Don’t let this put you off though as it was so worth it when you reach the top. There are great views along the way too so you can always turn back if the going gets too hard. Allow 2.5-4 hours to compete the hike to the viewpoint, take photos and get back. Watch the roots when it’s wet as they are super slippery

The museum is pretty neat, especially if you haven’t done any rock climbing before. They have exhibits that show you what tools are used, and how the sport started. It was particularly neat to see the evolution of the tools, eg shoes, from a hundred years ago till now. Most of the video exhibits had English but some were old enough that the videos were only in Norwegian. Overall this place is worth spending a couple of hours in.

Andalsnes Train Chapel

Church on rail. Welcome to the first and only train chapel in Norway - probably also the only one in the world - which has stopped by the platform of the end station of the Rauma Line andalsnes. This old and venerable railway carriage was a gift from the Norwegian State Railway, and which through a long life has served busy people on travel, will now serve as a small house of God to give people silence and peace in an otherwise noisy world. The chapel was consecrated by bishop Odd Bondevik on the 10th of June 2003 in the presence of our royal couple, king Harald and queen Sonja.
