Having stayed in the region of the Alqueva lake, we couldn't leave without driving on the dam itself.
Fortunately, there is a large parking on top of the dam so one can walk around and admire both the lake, on one side, and the dam on the other one.
Very impressive piece of hydraulic Portuguese engineering.

The Castle of the village of Portel should be from the 12th century
But in the following centuries this fortification has lost his Military importance and started to be falling into a ruin even after being classified as a National Monument, parts of the structure were falling down, they have done even an archaeological campaign on the interior of the Castle.
You cannot miss this monument this because you can see it from a certain distance as it is on top of a hill in the village.
Even being a ruin it is still a very interesting place to visit, this is our personal meaning, can be easely reached by car
