Platteville is the largest city in Grant County in southwestern Wisconsin. The population was 11,224 at the 2010 census, growing 12% since the 2000 Census. Over the years the locally famous "M" has become easier to access. It is maintained by the University of WI-Platteville and the students light the "M" every homecoming. They built a nice parking lot and a wooden stairway to the top of Platteville Mound with rest benches along the way. Once you get up there, you can take the hard-packed hiking trial which runs along the ridge of the mound. You can see sinkholes, limestone outcroppings, and caves. Get to the end and see the wonderful stacked stone art, built by some patient students, perhaps? You can see for miles around. If it's a Sunday mid-morning you can enjoy the clip-clop on the road below as the Amish horse and buggies go by.
