Branklyn Garden

Discover this 2-acre hillside garden, created in the 1920s using seeds collected by plant hunters. The garden is walking distance of Perth city centre and was developed by John and Dorothy Renton after they built their Arts & Crafts-inspired house. It’s set on the side of Kinnoull Hill, overlooking Perth.

Just across the river from the city centre this oasis is set at the foot of Kinnoull Hill. There is some limited parking on the small approach road and entrance fee for non-members of NT Scotland is £6.50 per adult. There are some plants for sale as well as seeds in the small shop and a delightful tearoom serving a choice of teas, coffee and soft drinks as well as home made cakes and scones. The pathways meander around the hillside setting and feature a wide range of plants and flowers to provide year round enjoyment (even if a little curtailed this year). Great way to spend an hour or two on the outskirts of the city.

Scone Palace

Scone Palace - a 5 star historic house visitor attraction. We are open five days a week and guided tours of the Palace can be booked from Wednesday through to Sunday via our web site. Come along and visit Moot Hill where the 'Kings of Scotland' were crowned. Have a wander around our 100 acres gardens and grounds, followed by a coffee and a Scone Palace scone from our Old Kitchen Coffee Shop.

Due to COVID19 some areas of the site were not open during our visit but we still had a great time and the staff were helpful, friendly and informative, and it still felt like good value for money. Strolling around the well-maintained grounds, past the site of the crowning of Scottish kings, through the proud strutting peacocks and past the fields of grazing highland cows and sheep is well worth it! The included guide leaflet makes the grounds walking tour easy to follow. The tour of the inside of the downstairs of the house was taken by a very professional, well-informed team who were warm and happy to answer any questions. The house really is an amazing timecapsule full of treasures! Highlights: the slightly un-PC but incredibly beautiful ivory figurines in the first room, the Dido Belle portrait (a must-see highlight), the porcelain collection and the organ built for the lady of the house. The outdoor coffee bar (indoor closed due to COVID19) had a good selection and the marquee seating (so you can drink it ‘indoors’!) was comfortable and clean. Plenty of parking and toilets in the car park were clean and tidy.

Elcho Castle

This site is closed for now. We’re working hard to gradually reopen the places you love while making sure the experience is safe for everyone. Elcho Castle is a handsome and complete 16th century fortified mansion with three projecting towers on the banks of the River Tay. This is a castle to explore. Parade up the grand staircase or scurry up the service stair, venture into the well-appointed kitchen and admire the views over the countryside from the high battlements. The remarkably complete house of the 1500s was the country retreat of the wealthy Wemyss family. Its orchard has been replanted with traditional varieties of apple, pear and plum and has become a haven for butterflies and wildlife. The castle still has in place original wrought iron grilles to protect the windows. The interior is complete and roofed, with remains of decorated plasterwork.

Had no idea that this castle existed till last year. It is a 16th century mansion house but was known as the "party castle"! You explore the castle in your own time and can go onto the high battlements which provide a great view. There is a well maintained orchard. Worth a visit.

Huntingtower Castle

This site is closed for now. We’re working hard to gradually reopen the places you love while making sure the experience is safe for everyone. Find out more about our reopening plans. A tale of two families - Huntingtower Castle was a lordly residence for 300 years, from the 15th to the 18th century. It is associated with two noble families: the Ruthvens (later earls of Gowrie) and, following their downfall in 1600, the Murrays (earls of Tullibardine and later dukes of Atholl). Prior to 1600, Huntingtower was known as the Place of Ruthven.Huntingtower has hosted some famous visitors, and been associated with some dramatic events. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here in 1565, during her honeymoon with Lord Darnley. In 1582, Mary’s son, James VI, was held here against his will by the 1st Earl of Gowrie, in a famous episode known as the ‘Ruthven Raid’.

I don't know how Historic Scotland recruit their guides, but the young man was a star. We had the friendliest of welcomes and the benefit of his knowledge and enthusiasm. The castle is fun to explore and despite its relatively modest size contains much of interest - a painted ceiling (rugs helpfully provided so you can lie on the floor to examine it in comfort), an unusual building plan, wall paintings, a huge internal dovecote etc etc. Good views from the towers and easy to locate. The only slight downside is the very limited parking space. Thus does deter coaches so it's possible that you can have the place pretty much to yourself.

What a lovely venue, well organised, beautiful hall, comfy spacious seating. The bar was well organised, good wine & beers with queues going down quickly, toilets clean & spacious. The atmosphere was wonderful. Would highly recommend this venue.

A wonderful museum and art gallery in the city of Perth. Situated at the top end of George Street and beside the Concert Hall so easy to find on foot or by car with parking available close by. Access for all abilities which is good. A information desk with extremely friendly and helpful staff. The museum shop is well worth a visit too after your time around the museum. Not an overly large museum but you can happily spend time looking at the antiquities and works of art. Good for children too due to interactive activities that helps them explore the museum and learn about the exhibits. A lot of detail has gone into the exhibits, background of the antiquities and art work. Many exhibits with a detailed history which is good. I have been visiting the museum from a child and have visited many times with my own child. A lovely way to spend a few hours alone, with friends or as a family and to immerse yourself in Scottish and world history and culture! Make sure you visit when in Perth.

Stanley Mills

This site is closed for now. We’re working hard to gradually reopen the places you love while making sure the experience is safe for everyone. Stanley Mills is one the best-preserved relics of the 18th-century Industrial Revolution. Textiles were produced here for 200 years. The mills were built in 1786 at a hairpin bend in the River Tay, where tremendous water-power was available. Machinery was powered initially by water wheels, and latterly by electricity generated by water-powered turbines. As the market changed and new technologies developed, buildings were added, adapted, expanded, shut down, reopened and demolished. The visitor centre tells the stories of those who worked there and the products they made. The superb interactive displays let you discover if your fingers are as nimble as a child labourer’s or compete to see if you are tough enough in business to make the mills profitable.
