Kangaroo Island Ocean Safari departs daily from the Christmas Cove Marina in Penneshaw 'Kangaroo Island's gateway'. Christmas Cove is one of Australia's Geological Monuments cut out by glacial movement 240 million years ago and it offers the perfect access to board the 7.5 metre vessel a Gemini Waverider that carries up to 12 passengers. In 1802 Matthew Flinders discovered Kangaroo Island on his world expedition. See the landing places where he and his crew arrived and where French explorer Nicolas Baudin came ashore and inscribed his details into Frenchman's rock in Hog bay. Kangaroo Island Ocean Safari takes you on a awesome 75 minute coastal and wildlife tour around the coastline of Kangaroo Island visiting places like Dolphin Cove, Cuttlefish Bay, Kangaroo Head and Snapper Point. Encounter pods of Bottle Nose and Common Dolphins that can been seen up close and enjoy them in their natural environment swimming up along side the boat, with numbers sometimes in the dozens and often with their baby calves. Colonies of New Zealand Fur Seals and Australian Sea Lions inhabit the coast that surrounds Kangaroo Island and these seals gather along the rocks enjoying the warm sun, resting after fishing for days on end and show off their agile swimming ability right before your eyes. Witness Southern Right Whales (seasonal) as they pass through these waters on their annual migration to the Great Australian Bight, look in awe at these giant majestic creatures often with their new calves who have swam so far from the Great Southern Ocean to give birth in these warmer safer waters of Kangaroo Island. There are many varieties of sea birds on the Safari including the unforgettable encounters with the mighty Osprey or sometimes known as the Sea Hawk. Opportunities arise on this wildlife Safari to marvel at the Osprey diving into the ocean to grasp fish with their powerful talons. Cormorants and Gulls are abundant along the coast. Put Kangaroo Island Ocean Safari on your 'must do' list - this is a Safari not to be missed on your visit to Kangaroo Island.

Kate and Mark provided a sumptuous repast of local produce to help celebrate a significant birthday in style. Unobtrusive and efficient, they left the place significantly tidier than they found it, with the guests satiated. Thanks so much for looking after us.

On a drive out to Cape Willoughtby Lighthouse Saturday, we stopped in for lunch at Dudley Wines Cellar Door on the way back(only about 10 mins drive out of Penneshaw, and, Wow, Wow, Wow , walking out to sit on a beautiful big deck to indulge of this Wow factor view. We ordered two tasting paddles of their wines, and a tasting plate of fresh and delicious local produce. Very nice wines, especially the premium reds (on the $15 paddle) and the food complemented perfectly. Great friendly and knowledgeable service as well. Well worth a hop into on Kangaroo Island. I’ve been to KI a few times and this is my favourite spot. A stunning secluded beach, beautiful bush and great fishing/ kayaking/ camping spot. Unfortunately the toilets are on one side of the river and the bbqs on the other but there are, as I understand it, plans to once again put in a bridge joining the two. Lots of little fish at the river mouth - fun place for kids to fish as you are pretty much guaranteed a bite - but most are too small so need to be tossed back. Go late at night or on a boat to the middle of the river to get something you can actually eat. Within a quick and easy drive from Penneshaw where the ferry comes in (20 minutes or so during the day. Allow more time at dawn, dusk and at night)

We booked online and had a great tour with Alana. There was no guarantee we'd see penguins on this night as they were likely to be at sea after their seasonal moult but Alana took us to a few of their known hidey holes and we saw 5 or 6 from a distance. It was a good size group of 12 or so and we each got a specially filtered torch for visibilty. It's a lovely walk along the foreshore and a spot of star gazing at the far end where the town lights are dimmest. Bikkies included. Alana is very knowledgeable and kept up a great commentary. Highly recommended.

You don't need to be big to convey history. This museum does it well. More of pre 1900 when life on the island was a struggle.
