Located on South Carolina's beautiful Grand Strand, Pawley's Island is the laid back alternative to the Myrtle Beach vacation. Shopping, dining, or golfing is all within reach. Just south of Myrtle Beach, Pawley's Island is best known for the Hammock Shops, a unique shopping experience of quaint small shops nestled under trees full of Spanish Moss. You can find everything from shoes to local artwork, or you might choose to go golfing on one of the many world-class golf courses in the area. While Pawley's is quieter and more relaxed than nearby Myrtle Beach, the latter's close proximity provides infinite possibilities for dining and nightlife. Murrell's Inlet, a quaint fishing village, and its bevy of seafood restaurants is just up the road and also has a Salt Marsh Preserve. Simple but delicious hamburgers at the River City cafe or finer dining at one of the hundreds of other restaurants are all within short driving distance. After dinner you might seek out one of the many venues for arts and entertainment. The Carolina Opry is well known for its amazing shows. You can see a live show or dance the night away…or both! Enjoying the beach is the obvious activity but there is so much more to do than just that. Parasailing is a popular option, as is a visit to the Huntington State Park to explore the local flora and fauna. The park has many programs to entertain and enlighten both the young and old. On the grounds is Atalaya, the home of the artist Anna Hyatt Huntington. Just across the street is Brookgreen Gardens which features many of the sculptures of the artist as well as the lovely manicured gardens.

History perspective: The area represents the pre civil war era and culture of 18 and 19th century rice plantations. Four of them when purchased by the Huntingtons in the 1930's, bounded E/W by the Waccamaw River and the Atlantic Ocean, became Brookgreen Garden and Huntington Beach State Park.

I love my Pawleys Island beach, so tranquil, undeveloped & just plain beautiful..The older I get I have found that Litchfield Beach has been my destination all summer long. I like going there for the change... Makes me remember All of my tourist years. Lol

A beautiful 9,170-acre green park located 16 miles south of Myrtle Beach.
Awe inspiring sculptures and gardens! This is a must see place. I recommend arriving early before the heat and when the crowds were thin. I think the price is reasonable IF you plan to take advantage of your ability to use it over 7 days. But it would have been nice to have the option of paying for a 1 day visit, as we were leaving the following day. Still it was worth the $18 cost.

Took a day while on spring break and hiked the trails in the park. Great viewing of wild life and staff was informative to let you know the best spot to see gators. They also offer camping for those looking for camping spots. Spacious sites which looked like electric and water hook ups. We hiked one trail which was a little over a mile one way..my only complaint would be trails are not marked very clearly and maps were a little hard to read but our overall experience was a great time had by all in our group of 18 people all on spring break together.

This is more for adults than kids. It's mostly bars and restaurants along the inlet marsh. Great for listening to live music and relaxing. No chain restaurants, all local.

This historical church was first built in the 1700s as an Episcopal church. This was before the Revolutionary War. South Carolina was one of the original 13 colonies and grew to become one of the wealthiest and most influential states before the Civil War. American royalty owned plantations along the coast. The labor was on the backs of the slaves who grew the crops and cultivated indigo, rice, tobacco and cotton. These cash crops were sold mostly overseas and made the land owners extremely wealthy. This church steps back in time to that era of American history.
It was one of the first congregations in the area. The original church had a balcony for the slaves and wooden doors on the pews downstairs. The church on the site was build over a hundred years ago after the original church burned down. It is in remarkable condition. Luckily we met a church member and she graciously opened the church so we could visit. It is usually closed.
The original foundation is the footprint for the church standing on this historic property. The stained glass is original as are many of the pieces inside. The congregation is now Anglican. They have services there every Sunday morning. A larger and newer church is across the street which has three additional services each Sunday as well as a preschool.
The church is surrounded by a beautiful cemetery which has James Dickey (poet) and his family buried there. There is also many tombstones from generations ago. You can wonder around and imagine life in the old south. Large live oaks are abundant. It is a beautiful church with a rich history.

I took the 4 hour golf short game series conducted by Bill Forbes. It was the best short game instruction I have received. I later bought Bill's book, Short Game Magic. My wife and I later took a one hour lesson from Roger Simpkins on the full swing. This was excellent as well.

Nice drive and old homes are very nice, many restored after Hugo in 1989. However, the properties are private so you can only drive by. The road is narrow with no shoulder. There really isn't anywhere to park and walk so you can not read all the historic markers. Pawley's Island area is very nice and historic but nothing special to see here.
