The water is rough and the waves high so its great people watching of experience surfers and windsurfers. The views over the sea are crazy amazing. at the end of the peninsula you can walk down on to the rocks and tidal pool area. Amazing. Some cows graze next door and love to have their pics taken. If you can bear to get up at 2am you should not miss the sunrise on the top of Haleakala. This company picks you up at your hotel and takes care of everything. Otherwise you need to apply for a permit in advance to go up yourself. After watching the sunrise, they take you down to where they provide you with a bicycle and helmet. It's an easy ride down the volcano, all downhill. At the bottom you go on 5 different ziplines, each gradually longer. You end with a picnic lunch. The whole thing was really fun and I highly recommend it.

Leilani Farm Sanctuary

Reservations are required. $20 per person tax-deductible donation (for adults and kids). Home to goats, turkeys, rabbits, donkeys, cats, geese, pigs, tortoises, Guinea pigs, ducks, deer, chickens, a cow and a dog, Leilani Farm Sanctuary is located on a lush 8-acre farm in Haiku, Maui. It is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization created to provide shelter and care for rescued animals, and humane education to the community. On the outer, most visible level, Leilani Farm Sanctuary lives and breathes upon a unique piece of rolling land, eight volcanic acres on a green Pacific island. But its superb location and jaw-dropping natural beauty are but reflections of its lush inner essence. The sanctuary is truly a paradise for animals and humans alike.

Several friends and I went to Leilani Farm Sanctuary for my birthday weekend. I could not have had a happier birthday! We actually did some volunteering which we had planned ahead with Laurelee, the founder. But for the purposes of this review, I will say that our Saturday morning tour was a fantastic kickoff to the weekend. The best word I can give our experience is HEARTWARMING. You can feel the love and happiness on the farm. The animals follow Laurelee around and share pasture together. Everywhere you look is a beautiful feast for the eyes of flowers, trees, barns, and peaceful and content animals (okay, there were a few rascally goats and deer, but it takes all kinds!). It was so soothing to come to a place where animals are treated with kindness and love. The children on the tour were the most fun to watch. They got to feed and pet animals while learning about their personalities. I can hardly think of a better way to teach kids the important values of respect and kindness towards others that we share the earth with. I would give a thousand star rating if I could.

HA Baldwin Beach Park

Reviewed By blackeldo - Kiama, Australia

IN TERMS OF SPACE, SAND & WATER QUALITY, BEACH PARK FACILITIES AND MORE THIS ONE TAKES THE AWARD.

There is no shortage of nice beaches on MAUI’S central north coast, although exposure to the sometimes blustery SOUTH EAST TRADE WINDS much of the year make them less popular with tourists, unless they are into WIND SURFING AND KITE SURFING. Actually other nearby beaches are better for these somewhat specialised activities – but for an all-round good beach for family visits, BALDWIN is hard to beat in this area.
As such it is a very popular beach with locals. Particularly on weekends – but size means that even on a nice Sunday the sand appeared uncrowded and there was still plenty of space in the parking lot.

DESCRIPTION: this is a long (1400m) strip of fairly clean white-yellow silica which still has plenty of width top of the tide – however the last few meters into the sea has a fairly steep profile which can cause a tricky SHORE BREAK when a bit of sea swell is around .
The beach curves gently slightly north of east but the eastern most 100m turns south east. This area is known as BALDWIN COVE and despite the water here seeming more protected than most sections because of a shallower section of reef offshore, there was a lot of “cut” (wave erosion) in this area when I called by. A deeper fringing reef runs the full length of the beach way offshore (900m) but its depth tends to act less of a barrier to incoming waves – in big winter storm swell BALDWIN is known as a good area for experienced BODY BOARDERS but casual swimmers should be careful of rip currents and gnarly shore breaks. However conditions were pretty benign when I called by on fairly blustery summer days.
There is a LIFEGUARD TOWER covering the eastern (most crowded) third of the beach but this is a long way from central and western areas. Keep a careful eye on your kids.
Back of the beach trees provide good shade in many areas.

The BEACH PARK FACILITIES are found down the eastern end – this big area (7 hectares/17acres) contains change sheds, plenty of parking, a sheltered picnic shed, bbq facilities and lotsa open space for picnics and playing fields. The lifeguard tower is on the beach nearby. A long access road leaves the HANA HWY into this area – about 900m/800yards west of the funky north coast surfer/hippy town of PAI’A (if coming from KAHULUI look for the access rd about 7.7km/4.8mi past the traffic lights at AIRPORT RD).

A BONUS – BABY BEACH. The PAI’A area BABY BEACH is actually part of BALDWIN BEACH – the western-most 300m.Don’t confuse it with MAUI’S OTHER BABY BEACH across at north LAHAINA on the west coast. TRIP ADVISOR has separate pages on these beaches.
At BALDWIN BAY the far western end of the beach has an offshore 300m long rock platform parallel to the sand and above sea level in most conditions which forms a natural break-wall promoting sheltered conditions for swimming and paddling in the 30-40m wide “lagoon” behind. One of my 2 visits was at low tide and there was still sufficient depth for swimming. Tidal range is pretty small and so it is not excessively deep top of the tide. I found on my Sunday pass-by this area was very popular with both family groups and other beach users. It is a hell of a walk from the northern beach park and the main access road, too far for kids, but fortunately you can access off the HANA HWY via NONOHE PL about 1000m/900yards west of the main beach park entrance. There is limited parking when you reach the small headland adjacent the beach and there are no other facilities.

TIPS
- I saw a few WINDSURFERS and KITE SURFERS way offshore here but HOOKIPA BEACH and KANAHA BEACH a few km each side are much better for these activities. See TRIP ADVISOR’S separate pages on each.
- This is an easy beach to walk to from PAI’A only 900m further east along a good footpath – fortunately so because the nearest bus stop is at PAI’A – catch BUS 35 from KAHULUI/THE AIRPORT ($2 – have correct money: no change given).
- TURTLES can often be seen here particularly in the quieter central areas where lack of people encourage them to bask in the sun afternoons. My first week-day pass-by saw a few in this area.

MY RATING: Only 3 stars for a beach for which I’ve given a fairly positive review? Well yeah. Here’s the thing: 3 STARS = AVERAGE, and the AVERAGE BEACH ON MAUI is pretty good – would earn 4 stars in say CALIFORNIA. And BALDWIN BEACH is certainly PRETTY GOOD – but no more so than the average MAUI beach.

Its downhill 90% of the way. But take your time. The whole idea in bikes not cars is to get you close to where you are. Stop lots, stop for photo's, views, breaks and food. It turns it from a 90 minute race into a 4 hour adventure. Staff were good, bikes are designed for this with excellent brakes but its not the mountain bike you have a home so dont expect massive shocks and knobbly tires. There is a vegan face at the bottom for those of that inclination and a fabulously old and characterful bakery/general store in Makawao (near the end).

Haliimaile Distilling Company

Hali'imaile Distilling Company produces handcrafted, locally made, authentic Hawaiian brand spirits. We are located in the heart of Maui's pineapple region, Upcountry Makawao, Maui. Our goal is to create "Hawaii in a Bottle." At Hali'imaile Distilling Company we set ourselves apart by starting with local ingredients and distilling in small batches, using unique stills, to create authentic Hawaiian spirits. Every part of our Distilling process is one of a kind and designed in house. Once distilled, our spirits are mixed with crystal clear reverse osmosis Hawaiian water. Upcountry Maui is not only a place, it's a lifestyle. Hali'imaile Distilling Company is located in the small town of Makawao, home to the Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys). For many years, Hawaiians have farmed the rich, volcanic soil of the Upcountry fields. Geographically speaking, Upcountry Maui is much of the area on the Haleakala side of Maui, away from the shoreline. Upcountry is mostly rural, agricultural and residential. Beyond upcountry, you can reach Maui's highest peak at the Haleakala National Park. The largest towns Upcountry are Makawao, Pukalani, Kula and Haiku, although Upcountry has no precise boundaries. Our pristine surroundings give us access to clean air, pure water and exquisite agriculture. Allowing us to produce ultra-premium, Hawaiian spirits. History of Hali'imaile Distilling Company Located in Makawao, Maui, Hali'imaile Distilling Company is located on the slopes of Haleakala. It sits among the pineapple fields and sugar cane fields that have been harvested for over a century. If you go to the edge of the property, you get a gorgeous view of the coastal rim of the entire island. Hali'imaile Distilling Company is the culmination of a dream made reality from the LeVecke family. A family whose life in the spirits industry spans over half a century, and more specifically on the Hawaiian Islands for the last 30 years...Building brands like Hana Bay Rum and Whaler's Rum. 15 Years ago 2 brothers decided to start their own truly authentic micro-distillery on the island of Maui. Their goal was to create spirits that were truly one of a kind. Their journey found them scouring the country for a like-minded master distiller that could help bring this dream to reality. Mark Nigbur, a charismatic and gifted distiller in Colorado, was introduced to the brothers. Mark was making a name for himself in the industry for his unconventional distilling techniques and superior products. He had founded his own micro-distillery where he was distilling vodka from pharmaceutical grade glass stills that he engineered and designed himself. It wasn't long until the relationship was cemented and Mark brought his family to Maui to become Hali'imaile Distilling Company's Master Distiller. Today Mark works alongside his eldest son Cory who currently manages the day to day Distilling operations. So while this is a fairly new distillery and a brand new visitor center, this was a family dream in the making for the last 30 years. We are happy to welcome you to their vision. Hali'imaile Distilling Company...Born Upcountry.

Several other products will make sure that just abut everyone will find something to love. Mark Nigbur really has a great, unique process to make the best better than anyone. Baby Beach

Reviewed By blackeldo - Kiama, Australia

MAUI HAS 2 BABY BEACHES – THE OTHER NEAR LAHAINA IN THE WEST IS NOT TOO BAD, BUT…..

….this one (the PAI’A area BABY BEACH in the central north) is better. It’s more sheltered, has more sand and is better suited to visitors with no kids
.
The PAI’A area BABY BEACH is actually part of BALDWIN BEACH – the western-most 300m. This far western end of BALDWIN has an 300m long offshore rock platform parallel to the sand and above sea level in most conditions which forms a natural break-wall promoting sheltered conditions for swimming and paddling in the 30-40m wide “lagoon” behind. One of my 2 visits was at low tide and there was still sufficient depth for swimming. Tidal range is pretty small and so it is not excessively deep top of the tide. Sand tends to be white/yellow and pretty clean - there must be 20m of it from the high tide mark to the trees in back of the beach: the latter offer good shade.
I found on my Sunday pass-by this area was very popular with both family groups and other beach users. Adults will appreciate there is a normal ocean beach just to the north of the sheltered area: in fact this continues another 1000 meters north to where the very good facilities of BALDWIN BAY BEACH PARK (TRIP ADVISOR has a separate page with good info – there is also a page on the LAHAINA BABY BEACH).

It is a hell of a walk from the northern beach park and the main access road, too far for kids, but fortunately you can access the BABY BEACH area off the HANA HWY via NONOHE PL about 1000m/900yards west of the main beach park entrance.
All is not perfect. There is limited parking when you reach the small headland adjacent the beach, there are no other facilities and no lifeguard. All these of course are available up the north end of BALDWIN.

TIPS
- I saw a few WINDSURFERS and KITE SURFERS way offshore here but HOOKIPA BEACH and KANAHA BEACH a few km each side are much better for these activities. See TRIP ADVISOR’S separate pages on each.
- BALDWIN is an easy beach to walk to from PAI’A only 900m further east along a good footpath – fortunately so because the nearest bus stop is at PAI’A – catch BUS 35 from KAHULUI/THE AIRPORT ($2 – have correct money: no change given). But remember, BABY BEACH is another 1000m west.
- TURTLES can often be seen just north of the sheltered section and the quieter central areas of BALDWIN where lack of people encourage them to bask in the sun afternoons. My first week-day pass-by saw a few in these areas.

MY RATING – the short-comings (no lifeguards, limited parking, no facilities) make this beach inferior to the average MAUI beach. But the latter are very good by world standards – if AVERAGE is 3 STARS I’d give them high 3s. I gave LAHAINA’S BABY BEACH low 3s [it is too good for 2 stars (which is POOR on TRIPADVISOR)] – because of the advantages of PAI’S BABY BEACH (more sheltered, more sand, better for non-kid visitors) I give it mid 3s.
