Grotto Beach

Reviewed By JPandTracy - Clanwilliam, South Africa

Grotto beach provided the wife, the kids and I with hours of entertainment on our Hermanus breakaway. The beach is a beautiful walking beach. It feels like it stretches all the way to Gansbaai, and is certainly long enough to awaken your appetite for ice cream and to build a need for a swim. The life guards were on duty at all advertised times and were quite attentive to the crowds on busy days. There's lots of space to accommodate everyone, with umbrellas and sun-loungers available for hire, and let's not forget the on-site ice-cream guy: he's a hero of the beach too! Watch the tides. Our children are still young, so when we forgot to check what was happening and walked into the waves as high-tide was pushing in, we soon felt the power of the ocean as it rolled us, kicking and spluttering, back on to the beach... All around: five stars.

GREAT place with friendly staff! We had a burger for a affordable price that was amazing. We also enjoyed a platter including a Swedish delicacy called Raclette and two glasses of their refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, this is definitely a must have. Overall great experience and definitely one of my favourite farms in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.

African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary

The African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) a project of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT) based in Gansbaai, South Africa. A state of the art facility, designed and built by passionate experts, that strives to provide local marine avian species with a local rehabilitative centre where injured, diseased or distressed birds can be treated and rehabilitated.

Reviewed By janethN9787CD - Banbury, United Kingdom

My husband read about this Sanctuary in a local newspaper and thought it would be somewhere interesting for us to visit, as I am obsessed with penguins! We always visit Boulder Bay and Stony Point when we holiday in South Africa, but this is a very different attraction. Due to all the over-fishing and plastic waste in our oceans,, there are many thousands of sea creatures who are suffering. This Sanctuary rescues sea birds and penguins and takes them to this amazing place. I was delighted to be allowed to be shown around the whole place including the ICU, the hospital, the medical centre, and the various places where the inmates are taken from arrival to hopefully their rehabilitation into the wild. They have the most gorgeous selection of penguins in various states of health, and there are even three pairs who have settled down together. I cannot speak highly enough of this 'attraction' and would encourage anyone to go and visit and get a greater wealth of knowledge about the care system for our sea birds and penguins. We were told that in 1920 there were 1,000,000 African penguins, now there are 18,000 and by 2030 they will probably be extinct - how awful!

Danger Point Lighthouse

Reviewed By 23peterf - Hermanus, South Africa

This lighthouse is located close to the relatively remote town of Kleinbaai famous for its white shark diving tourism. The lighthouse was built in 1895 over 40 years after the HMS Birkenhead, a British troop carrier hit a reef about 1 kilometre away offshore and sank with the tragic loss of over 400 lifes in 1852. The reef was clearly visible from the shore during our visit with the waves breaking over it. There still appears to be an eerie silence hovering over this place. After having paid an unusually small entrance fee we climbed up the light house which offers a good 360 degree view over this rather remote part of the coastline. On the basement is a mini museum displaying previously used electric light bulbs and gas lights. There was a very friendly lighthouse keeper on site who happily shared his knowledge about this and other lighthouses along the coast. There is plenty of parking at the bottom, clean toilets and one can even book self catering accommodation on the property. I can definitely recommend to visit this very interesting tourist attraction which is suitable for the whole family. Please check opening times: October - April Monday to Friday10h00-15h00, rest of year by appointment (+27 21 449 2400).
