Great River State Trail

Reviewed By TerriM152 - Chicago, United States

This is one of the most beautiful trails I have ridden. The stretches through the wildlife preserve are lovely. We saw an egret, a heron, a snake, a turtle and toads. The only negative is that the trail is not particularly well-maintained. For most of the portion that we rode (Onalaska to Trempeauneau and back) there is a grass "median" in the trail and only narrow tracks to ride. We stopped for lunch at the Trempeauneau Hotel, which is a gem, right on the river. Good food and good service.

Schafer's River Rentals

Reserved a half-day pontoon boat online. Price was very reasonable. The boat was new this year. We wanted to do some fishing and some sightseeing. We were directed to an area where the fishing was good and caught a good number of fish. Took a nice ride around Lake Onalaska as well. Saw some eagles and beautiful scenery. I would definitely recommend Schafer’s.

Stopped in on a Saturday about 5pm, there were just a few people at the tasting bar. They offer a variety of wines, cider and beer, thankfully they have very reasonable tasting prices so my husband and I got to try most of everything they had to offer. The person who helped us was very friendly, willing to answer any questions and explain the pricing and products. She had great timing in knowing when to get us a new sampling, when to converse a bit and when to give us some time to ourselves. The atmosphere was a fun tiki environment with wines named in an island theme and the beer (Skeleton Crew Brew) had a pirate theme. Definitely try the Twine (a tea wine) and their cider - I think those were my favorite. I learned the beer is only available on tap (for now), since it is a new endeavor for them. We're in town about once a year, and we will for sure be stopping in again!

Greens Coulee Park

Reviewed By AndrewFromMadison - Madison, United States

I am always drawn to higher places, and get excited when I find another one, especially with views of Mississippi. The park consists of tow parts, intermixed. Oe is owned by City of Onalaska, and another one is a parcel of Mississippi Valley Conservancy holdings. They blend in, and there is no signage distinguishing between the two. One parking lot is off the Stonebridge Ave.(and was inaccessible and under constructions when I visited). Another one is at the end of Clifford Dr. - and that one only allows parking between May and October, for some reason. I was there in April and was out of luck - but parked on the narrow street successfully, avoiding tickets or other problems. Oddly, the closed parking at Stonebridge directs you to park at Clifford (closed for a season)- apparently some people need to take their heads out from you know where. But that was minor annoyance. The place is beautiful. You climb a steep trail, and then up on the hill there are variety of trail going in different directions, and several observation points. Awesome experience and beautiful views - and unlike at La Crosse Bluffs system the place was not crowded at all.
