If you’re visiting Oberammergau in a year ending with zero, it’s all about the Passion Play. Villagers have performed it since the 17th century. It’s seven hours long (thankfully, with an intermission), and about half the townspeople participate in 100+ performances between May and October. And since hundreds of thousands are expected to attend over the course of those performances, if you’re in town, you’ll have company.

We spent a day, purchasing two trips down the alpine coaster. We also did the zip line experience and enjoyed a lovely lunch in the bier garden. The views are spectacular and worth extra hiking. The coaster is an absolute blast!

A bizarre, yet glamorous, castle built by King Ludwig II.
This was much smaller than it looks, but well worth the trip. We have been to Neueschwanstei and Herren Chiemsee, but this was the best. Very cozy and ornate, you get a real feel as to how Ludwig lived. The tour guide was very nice. Guidebooks are available in different languages but tours are guided. Our tour was in German but she answered our questions in English. You have to buy a ticket to get a tour time. In the winter all you can see is the castle not the grounds or other buildings.

We had unforgettable trip up to the Hörnle in a sunny summer day. The personnel was very professional and helpful. They speak basic English and that was just enough for us to understand how the lift sits system works. Nevertheless I managed almost to fall on the ground when we supposed to come off but assistant from the top reacted very fast and helped me.
The view from the top of the maintain is unforgettable. If you are in the area, that's a one must to visit activity.

Awesome experience for the kids. I was a bit scared but my 10 year old reassured me that it will be ok. ;) The ski lift will take you up to the top, but if you are not comfortable sitting on a bench with your feet dangling, you might want to skip it.

This Benedictine monastery is noted for the large, beautifully decorated, domed chapel. Also on the premises is a large gift shop that offers many products made by the monks.

I read other reviews and opted for this mountain rather than Zupspitze. Zupspitze was a little pricey for the entire family. It was a wonderful way to spend a few hours. As you go up the mountain, you'll see people walking and hiking up; great for them it seemed pretty daunting to me. On your way up the car makes one stop, stay on in order to go to the top. Once there, the views are amazing; the horses and cows roam free. There are many places to walk around once up at the top. There is also a restaurant and then one at a much higher elevation that we didn't visit. The one we did visit had very reasonably priced snacks and again everything had the backdrop of the amazing views. Wank mountain is definitely worth your time to visit.

This massive church is frequented visited by Catholic pilgrims.
The beauty exists all around this lovely landmark in Oberammergau. From the town cemetery that has the wooden sculpture of the burgermeister from the 19th century. To the exterior architecture of the church and clock/bell tower that captures the eye and really points to the heart of the enchanting town. The inside is a completely spiritual experience with the intricate detail and beauty the designers created is worth the time to come and pay a respectful visit.

A very large Benedictine church, Baroque in style with a stunning frescoed dome.
For 2 Euros at the entrance to the church are brochures in various languages to help accent your experience during your visit.
Allow time to walk around the property, visit the distillery, the gift shop, and the cheese shop in the back.

The Pilate House at Oberammergau is one of the best of the classic luftlmalerei houses (the outside walls are painted with fresco -- pigment applied to freshly laid moist plaster, so the pigment soaks into the plaster permanently) with trompe-l'oeil 3-Dimensional precision.
The outside paintings show Jesus being presented to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Jerusalem, a key scene in the Passion of Christ. The paintings are vivid and dramatic.
Other parts of the building a painted cleverely to look like massive pillars and brickwork and rococo moulding -- but the painted surface is actually totally flat -- the illusion of 3-dimensional depth is stunning!
And there is a charming garden of box hedges and decorative shrubs.
Inside the house the woodcarvers, glass painters, and metal workers of Oberammergau work in shifts on actual carvings, paintings, and metal beating and bending, showing you -- FREE ENTRY, no charge for photos! -- how these fascinating crafts are done.
Upstairs there is a small gallery of stunning carved figures and other sculptures, some paintings, and a display of historical painted-from-behind glass paintings -- workes that inspired ranz Marc and Vassily Kandinsky and the Blue Rider (Blaue Reiter) art movement of the early Twentieth century.
This is open daily, for free, and is one of the great highlights of Oberammergau!
