Otočec means and is little island. This island is in the middle of river Krka. Connections to the island are two wooden Bridges. One is under reconstruction in March 2017. Park is opportunity. Owners can do much more from it. Meadow is a place for spring flowers, terraces need to have connections to the paths, boats can be prepared and parking area smaller and with less asphalt. There is still place for another sculpture or two. Castle is a crown in the middle.

Most exceptional building in the middle of Novo mesto is old Gothic church, now Cathedral. They just added new bronze doors for Anno Santo. Inside stands huge main altar with painting of St. Nicholas, work of famous Jacopo Tintoretto, the only work of this painter in Slovenia. From the church Terrace you have nice view. There is small lapidary in the cellar with a copy of Vienna bishop Jurij Slatkonja. He was from Slovene origin. Church is nearly always open. It is just a short five minutes’ walk up to the Cathedral from the main square.

Local museum with several buildings stands near the church in the middle of Novo mesto. You can look at Exhibitions of local history, pottery. You need to take more time for archeology. They have really excellent situlas, golden necklesses and other objects from prehistoric times (bronze age) to the antiquity. Try to listen to the guided tour. Museum has small souvenir shop. For fresh drinks you need to go to the main square.

Breg (meaning "a river bank") is a picturesque part of the old town, situated, as the name suggests, at the steep left bank of the Krka river. Obviously it's best viewed from the other (i.e. right) bank of the river. One fine spot to view and take great photos is right from the Kandija bridge (the oldest bridge in the town, kinda an extension of Glavni trg). The other one is from a boat mooring where the Nad mlini and Resslova streets branch off the Kandijska street, just a short walk down the street from the Kandija bridge.

The oldest still existing bridge in the town, built in 1898. It connects Glavni trg and the Kandija district. Open to pedestrians and cyclists. Motor vehicles are also permitted at the moment, however the town's management is trying to limit motor traffic in the old town.
The best place to admire the bridge's iron construction is from the "frog's perspective" from any of the river's bank, for instance from boat moorings at the Kandijska street or at the Župančič Promenade (Župančičevo sprehajališče)

Very attractive location by the river. Monastery is very old and well maintained. Friars are very helpful and kind. You can also visit the library to see some codecs from 1418 and many more. You have to try special schnapps made by Franciscan friars in Novo mesto called Franciskove kapljice – Drops of St. Francis. Very tasty and healthy. If you want to visit you have to call one day before to reserve the hour for visit. It is worth of your time for visit. You won’t regret.

German bunker in Drska area of Novo mesto was built immediately after German occupation of Novo mesto in October 1943. Germans continued to use Italian fortifications (trenches, barbed wires, small foritications) used for controlling the movement in and out of Novo mesto and in 1943 they build many fortified bunkers around city. German anti-tank Bunker in Drska measures 6m x 5,7m, the height is 3m and the walls are 85cm thick. When marshall Tito visited Novo mesto in 1952 the citizens put Škoda artillery gun from WW1 on the roof and later it was replaced by WW2 anti-aircaft gun Flak M38. In 1992 the bunker was listed as local heritage site and it is one of the starting points for "Novo mesto in wire" (Novo mesto v žici) memorial walk. It is tjhe only well preserved ww2 bunker in the region.

Looks like a government building in the center of Novo Mesto. But no information is provided. Just looks nice.

I was expecting more from Novo Mesto. Even though Sv. Miklavz is a quite interesting church - do not miss the Tintoretto - the city itself does not offer much more else. The central square is nice, with the Rotovz as most impressive building, but not more than that. Stop if you are on the way.
