Beautiful temple standing in the middle of a tank. This shrine must be visited for it's spiritual significance. This is the place where Lord Mahavira attained nirvana in 527 BCE. The place where the Lord was cremated was so sacred to his devotees that thousands of them took away the soil from the site, eventually creating a tank where the temple was constructed.

The ruins which were restored by the Archiological society of India in the 1950's depicts our glorious past dating back to the 5th century AD. The artifacts excavated are stored in the Nalanda museum which is opposite the ruins. The university is said to have had 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers. Only a part of the ruins have been escalated. Felt great to be at a place which is so much a part of the history and culture of India.

Xuan Zang, a Chinese Buddhist, travelled to Nalanda University and various other great centers of learning in India from Xian in China and returned to Xian in 645 AD after traveling a distance of 50,000 km in 17 years. This statue is at his memorial in Nalanda. Nalanda university was discovered based on his chronicles. The memorial has many maps tracing the route Mr Zhang travelled from Xian along the edge of gobi desert on the ancient silk route to Ferghana valley, Smarkhand and through the mountain passes of Hindu Khush mountains he entered the river valleys of northern India from where he travelled to central, western and southern parts of India.

Very beautiful place. Set in a large ground with nice walkway and green lawn, the memorial is a classic Chinese styled building. The memorial hall provides plenty of information about Xuan Zang's travel to India and his life. Very impressive place. Well worth a visit when in Nalanda.

The museum is located opposite the Nalanda ruins and houses priceless artifacts made of stone, metal and mud, excavated from the site. Some of them have been damaged. Charred remains of rice (part of Nalanda was destroyed by fire) are stored in a bowl.

This place is located in the Nalanda district of the Bihar state. Although the Nalanda, is famous, for the ruins of the great ancient Nalanda university, established by the great Chanakya, but for Jains it is the birth place of the 24th Jain Teerthankar Lord Mahaveer. This temple is one of the greatest, in every means. The Nadyavart Mahal, Trikal Chaubisi Mandir,& the Navgrah Shanti Mandir, are 3 different temples, established with different goals, & it is a treat to watch these temples. But being the birth place of the Lord Mahaveer, is the most important thing. In fact many people, including Jains, are confused with the name Kundalpur, as a place with the same name exists in the Damoh district of Madhya Pradesh, but that's not the birth place of Lord Mahaveer, instead this one is.
