Nafplio (Greek: Ναύπλιο) is a seaport town in the Peloponnese in Greece that has expanded up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf. The town was an important seaport held under a succession of royal houses in the Middle Ages as part of the lordship of Argos and Nauplia, held initially by the de la Roche following the Fourth Crusade before coming under the Republic of Venice and, lastly, the Ottoman Empire. The town was the capital of the First Hellenic Republic and of the Kingdom of Greece, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. Nafplio is now the capital of the regional unit of Argolis.

A selection of Greek costumes we found to be one of the most absorbing themes. Elaborate and colourful they reflect the attention and pride taken in their creation and display. Over a couple of floors many aspects of everyday life from differing areas are shown. Living and dining rooms plus kitchen wares are here. Lives of children aren’t neglected. Toys are plentiful; rocking horses and soft playthings are abundant. Cloth making, a central part of life, is exemplified with weavers and looms.

A more perfect home for the superlative collections could not be found. Regarded as one of the best preserved Venetian buildings in the country, it served as the old Navy Arsenal. From the remote Mesolithic times onwards treasured finds are displayed. Excavations began at Franchthi Cave in 1967 and were anticipated to be only a short stop-gap, but what was found exceeded all expectations, comprising artefacts at the nexus of hunter-gatherer to settled lives. Bronze Age exhibits are marvellous and show a range of pottery, figurines and vessels. Mycenaean Palace culture from areas under its rule is fascinating and reflect the sophistication and trade links underway. Armour and other items from Dendra were another highlight.

If you are walking by, take a peek inside. Beautiful old church close to Old Town. At one corner of the plaza you can see where the man paints the religious paintings for the churches. Beautiful! There is nothing else really in that plaza.

Not to be missed. The history is highly interesting and the views are incredible. Give it two hours to fully explore the fortress, wear good walking shoes, and be prepared for some slopes and strenuous walking (in places) Bring water!

We had two magnificent vistas of it, from the harbour and an aerial view from Palamidi. An imposing robust bastion in light-hued stone it looked particularly grand in the fine morning sunshine. Built in the 1470s by the first Venetian rulers of the area it provided defence from sea attack and invasion. To this end there was apparently further protective measures in the form of a chain between it and Akronafplia. After the Ottoman occupations it served as a prison for a while and then welcomed guests as a luxury hotel during the last century.

The well-preserved ruins of the Mycenaean acropolis and Citadel of Tiryns are more than 3,000 years old. Mycenaean archaeological site in Argolis in the Peloponnese, some kilometres north of Nauplion.
I really do like coming here, it is an amazing site. The scale of the ruins is fabulous, and the walls are incredibly thick and impressive. You can walk around the site, and there will be few other visitors, if any. The palace is area is good, the only problem is that there are no information boards at all, except ones telling you about the restoration, not the history etc.

A most impressive and imposing bastion extends widely in this the oldest part of the city. Commanding castellations are testament to the area's strategic importance since antiquity. What we admire today is most the result of Venetian efforts, even though the lower segments of the fortress have roots originating from the Bronze era. Panoramic vistas of the sea, harbour and cityscapes are another enjoyable reward for taking the time to visit.
