Our docents have always been friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous. If you want some local history and sometimes, depending on you docent, personal reminiscences about early Modesto, this is one of the best places to find it.
Enjoy yourself, we have several times.
I have seen several wedding parties use the grounds for pictures. I don't know if there a charge for this.
Great place for 6-years and up to get a glimpse of the past.

This is a charming, clean, comfortable, little theatre from long ago that has been thoroughly restored and finally has a good sound system.
Personally, I wish a larger theatre in this area had been saved, like the Strand in Modesto, the Alhambra in Sacramento, The Fox in San Francisco... Even if The Tower Theatre in Sacramento was restored it would have a 70MM Screen.
The problem with The State is that the only really good seat is in the middle of the first row of the balcony, because only the balcony has stadium seating, but if you even sit in just the second or third row of the balcony you will feel like you are a mile from the screen. They know this and want to install a much larger screen some day, but for now, that's it.
If I think of something else later that I want to add to this, or a better way of writing something I will NOT be able to, because this site does NOT allow edits. This is, of course, the most ridiculous thing on any site, so I hardly ever write reviews on it any more.

My family enjoys spending a summer night at Thurman field watching the Modesto Nuts play baseball. The staff all are very friendly, the field and facilities are all very clean. There's lots of side fun activities that include "kids" of all ages. And it won't break your bank taking the entire family out for a night of fun!

Take a few minutes to consider history as a learning tool. Sometimes we think of the past as the good old days. But usually that is somewhat short of true. Go to museum with the kids and learn.

I visited here with my daughter and two grandsons yesterday and we all had an enjoyable time at this local museum. The museum is housed in the science building of Modesto Junior College west campus. The museum was moved here from a smaller building less than a year ago. It is a beautiful building and the exhibits are well done. To begin with, we enjoyed the very interesting fountain outside the building. This fountain which is computer generated is like a mini water show with water shooting out in segments and spurts that captivated us all. My 2-1/2 year old grandson said, "I love this" while watching it. Exhibits inside the museum feature Central Valley habitats of animals, plants and "water" which are realistic looking. There are exhibits of the animals and birds of the grassland; exhibits of the plants and flowers of the area and Native Californians. There are a number of birds exhibited as the Central Valley is known for many migratory birds including ducks, geese, raptors, etc. Buttons can be pushed to hear some of the bird calls. Animals included deer, bear, mountain lion, bobcat, beaver, raccoon, skunk, fox, badger, grey wolf, pronghorn antelope, tule elk and a grizzly bear exhibit (now extinct in California). There is a very large children's room that has one long wall with tanks and the only live animals in the museum: snakes, turtles, lizards, skink, spiders, etc. The room has a number of books, games and puzzles that children can play with at several tables. My grandsons had fun putting together some of the puzzles available. The last room of interest is a science room with a table of the periodic elements and most interesting, a 1.5 meter sphere hanging in the large room from which is projected information on the planets, earth, galaxies and other astronomy information. This was really cool to watch and interested all of us. I would have liked to stay and watch more of what was projected on the sphere but we had to leave for lunch. There is a planetarium also on site but we did not check that out but I plan to in the future. I would like to come back to this museum in the near future and spend more time looking at the exhibits and reading the information. The museum is nicely done and would appeal to anyone of any age who enjoys natural history and science.

There are some scattered signs throughout downtown with some tidbits of random information. I am familiar with lots of golden oldies, but the walk of fame names are not quite legends. Google provides more relevant information about Graffiti Night, cruising and the history of Modesto that Modesto outlawed 20 years ago.

A neon arch in the downtown area.
I went to this part of Modesto just because I was going to have dinner nearby in one of the taco trucks then I saw the place from there and I decided to go. The place is average nothing special.

This is a 2 mile long wide paved multi-use trail for bikes and walkers. It is part of of a park with some restrooms, picnic tables, and playground facilities available. It is well away from densley populated areas due to the county airport being adjacent. Large Oak, Walnut trees keep this area shaded, pleasant and a haven for wildlife due to the Tuolomme River.
Only 10 minutes off the 99 freeway, it is a great place to walk and enjoy some conversation with a friend, or get a good run in for exercise. On a Monday afternoon from 4-6pm I only saw about 5-7 people on the trail. A quiet area, with plenty of grass and quieter nooks off the trail to relax. No benches though.

I go here quite often, especially when there is something I really want to see! It could use some updated decor, but it's affordable, seats are comfortable and the parking structure is directly in front of the theatre (plus they have parking validation)! It is surrounded by a variety of restaurants, cool dessert places and there was even a live band playing when we arrived and when we were leaving!
