The falls consisted of 3 parts - the large fall (Ootaki) of 18 meters high which could closely be viewed by walking over the suspension bridge. Then there were a Male Fall (Odaki), and a Female Fall (Medaki). The potholes (Ouketsu) at upstream were formed by pebbles and rocks gushing from the foot of Kirishima Mountains.
We visited the place on a weekday and all food outlets were closed.

I know this place as Takachiho Farm and was taken here by my Japanese friend. I loved the fresh air and the views to the Mountains were great. The area is famous for the filming of a James Bond movie. The dairy shop was full of cheeses and products which I wanted to buy but constant travel didn't permit it. There's a great foot bath as well. It was easy to park and I don't recall any fees to enjoy the experience. Highly recommended.

This shrine is packed with cute and fun thigns to see. Most of the things are signs of the gods' presence. There are some really tall and original old stone steps up to the main part of the shrine. There are also places to get blessed water for your wallet (brings good fortune) and also a rock split in half in a pond. I enjoy going to this shrine near Golden Week because there is a Wysteria shelf in the parking lot that is pretty. Usually the shrine is empty and can be a bit difficult to locate. Worth the trouble, though.

Sekino Falls is one of the "100 Best Waterfalls in Japan" mostly for the large rocks at the top of the falls called "potholes". It is easy to walk up the back of the falls to get to these and it is not unusual to see people walking on them. Outside of rainy season the rocks are very exposed and you can walk almost all the way out to the top of the waterfall if you dare. There is nothing and no one to stop you. Be careful as they can be slippery and if a sudden gush of water were to come you could be swept away. This is a nice place to see sakura in early/mid March, or fall leaves in late November!

This park is beautiful, my favorite part about it is the shrine up on the hill. you can go up there and see all of Miyakonojo. During Sakura season this park is a bit too crowded with people for my tastes on the weekends, so I would suggest going at a time when most people are working if you can. It is nice to sit under the trees and let the sakura fall around you. There is also a long path lined with the trees.
It is rated one of the best 100 spots for sakura in Japan. Definitely worth a trip if you are in the area at the right time!
