Nature reserve with a long stretch of rocky shoreline, perfect for birdwatching and strolling.
First stop was the Parking lot for the Tower Viewpoint: Over some green space with lots of flowers and then it went up towards the viewpoint: with amazing views as well as some huge Garry oaks – this is such a beautiful part of the Shoreline: then we hear some funny noise – and see there on the island in front of us are a lot of seals!! From here we walked along the outside on a teeny tiny path over branches and along the bluffs all the way down to the sand: at the moment it is low tide so there is a lot of sand – you could walk endlessly – it is kind of super cool. We admired and walked along the shoreline until we came to some “natural” stone steps and went back up and back to the motorhome.

A delightful hike (about 20 minutes) leads from the open parking area (free) - past thickets of blackberry bushes - into a second-growth forest enriched with ferns & maple leaf trails - toward a secluded pebbly beach with magnificent view overlooking the sparkling waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Numerous beached logs offer comfortable places to rest, & are perfect for lounging to take in the stunning scenery, and scout for any wildlife swimming by. It’s very calming here. Just the waves lapping on the shore, gently rolling the numerous pebbles. Gleaming water blends with azure sky & hazy blue-gray mountains. You can see Victoria in the distance, and watch the COHO ferry sailing to & fro, passing distant freighters, naval ships, cruise ships, & the smaller pleasure & whale-watching boats. Not many people here on week days. Weekends you may see more people coming & going - especially those walking their dogs, & playing stick-fetch games prompting frequent leaping into the water. Despite all that, it still feels like you are almost alone, & can enjoy the peacefulness of the place. Amazingly people seem to disappear once they are nestled among the logs. We were lucky one evening to watch a lively family of river otters catching fish, & then scramble ashore past a small flock of Canada Geese. Later we saw a lone harbor seal swimming by. Another evening we watched a trio of frolicking sea lions at the surface. Every day is different! Bring your binoculars to see the birdlife at sea! There may be picturesque rafts of Surf Scoters, or diving Cormorants, Gulls, Grebes, Loons, & more. In contrast, in the forest, you mostly hear (not see) the birds (jays, crows, woodpeckers, & chickadees). Although the forest trail is mostly level, it does have areas with steps, & a few hilly sections. Bring a walking stick to help steady yourself over some of the rougher rocks & knobby roots. It’s definitely not wheelchair accessible! Two picnic tables are near the parking lot, in a spacious grassy area. Clean pit toilets are nearby, with hand-sanitizer dispensers. Use this restroom before you hike down the trail, since there are no facilities at the beach. This park is about a 45-minute drive west of Victoria, and is near the more popular Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park and East Sooke Park.
