We came here in the evening and it was very nice by night - lit up beautifully. We got some great architectural pictures. Everything, however, was closed so we only saw the outside.

Lake Albano is one of the MUST SEE sights while visiting Castel Gandolfo. Words can't adequately describe the beauty of this lake - an ancient volcano. Photo opportunities abound here. I always have to get photos and selfies. This is really magnificent with the Mountains in the background! A MUST SEE!

I saw photos of this in the movie Roman Holiday and we decided to try a visit. I have been to Versailles France twice and this building was much more beautiful. It was also built before Versailles. The fact that the family still owns gives you a chance to see how it was meant to be. We had a wonderful tour of the Gardens before we went into the building. Our guide was amazing and so passionate about the art and history of the building. He stayed with our group for 1 1/2 hours. This is one of my top places to see in Rome. It is a little pricey and you have to check when it is open. Saturday is the best day. We saw the garden, apartment and building itself.

Very private one-on-one tour with the museum curator on the day I visited. Once the door was opened and I was allowed to descend the steep stairs to arrive in the cistern I felt as if I was transported back 2000 years. The architecture is amazing and he sheer size of the arches and entire structure is amazing. It's not just one cistern but rather three cisterns. There are 36 pillars that subjugate the various aisles. The plan is of a trapezoidal plan that is over 48 meters long. The cisterns were constructed in the 1st century AD and later used for the 2nd Legion Casterna.
I would recommend calling the museum (069323490) to arrange a tour. The cost of 10.50 Euros will enable you access not only to the Second Legion Museum but also the Amphitheatre, the cisterns, and "The Rotonda". Not only great access to the sites but with a knowledgeable and friendly guide. Just know that they only speak Italian.

Strawberry capital. Medieval village overlooking the lake. We had a wonderful afternoon. Corkscrew road in - over a bridge, through a curved tunnel and back under the bridge. At the far end of the village there is a path dropping below the walls to a cafe with views over the lake.

Caught the train from Termini, very cheap but watch your timetable. Our pre booked English speaking guided tour started at 10.30 and big gap between 9.00 am train and the next available. Train clean, new and punctual.
A steep climb from the train station should help you loose a few pounds, took about 20 minutes but if not very mobile maybe there is an alternative route?
Security at the palace strict so take identity documents - as ticket details instruct you to do.
The Gardens are well away from the palace and well worth seeing. A good guide, as we had, is worth her weight in gold. Fascinating blend of the old and new.
The palace rather austere in a gilded, ornate sort of way. Interesting but also an extra 5 euro on top of what I had booked online. Probably my fault.

We took two tours with Rome Magic. Both were good. Our Vatican tour with Vanessa was excellent. She was knowledgeable and paced appropriately. Our second tour of ancient Rome was good; however, our guide was not the best fit for our active family with two teen boys. Our guide, while knowledgeable, was very slow. Because of the slow pace, we never saw Palatine Hill, which was a big disappointment. Lesson learned- be specific about expectations, and what is priority to see in advance.

Stunning lake that looks like it has been scooped out of the landscape... which it has, by a volcano. Steep sides, very calm water, great views. Several villages surround the Lake & during a break from nature, you can eat like a local at one of the tiny trattoria. Great break from the quick pace of Rome.
