Ficklin Vineyards

Dashed to Fresno from L.A. to 'hit' couple of wineries b4 endofday. Easily found Ficklin but were eager to find a second one harder to find. The sales manager was so effective, interesting and pleasant we hated to 'drink and run'. Having been to Puerto Portugal twice we were fascinated to find the connection here in our home state ( though we r living now in Tampa) due to Portugese VINES! I've bought Ficklin ports in Bermuda and in Florida and now will continue to. Bought 3 pack of their scrumny flavored ports w/ thought of sharing w/ son&wife and catsitter but we r keeping these ALL 2 OURSELVES????. Top it off, fellow saw to it we got to Solitary JUST in time b4 tgey closed!!! DO make this stop and buy their reasonably priced port!

Nelder Grove

Off the beaten path, this sacred spiritual place had little to no tourists (I met two people) but was filled with life and beauty with a preternatural calm over the entire site. Seeing the Bull Buck tree was a privilege and was all the more moving as I had the grove all to myself. A very strange and poignant feeling standing in awe in front of this 2700 year old giant. Not the easiest site to get to but for me that just added to the experience, if you have an adventurous spirit you will love this place

This was our last hike on our way out of the park. I believe the trailhead is right inside the West Park entrance. Be sure to pack a couple bottles of water, as the hike up is fairly steep (the 10,000' to 10,500' elevation over the saddleback of a ridge, took us 1.5 hrs to hike up, then theres a 200' hike down to the lakes. middle Gaylor Lake is what you see as you top the ridge, then you can hike down and to your right and find upper Gaylor Lake. Those were the ones we hiked to & they were beautiful. We had a picnic lunch overlooking the middle lake & listened to the frogs. Saw a hummingbird moth which I'd never even heard of but was fascinating, and a Marmot.

We ate here based on our AirBNB hosts recommendation. Although we had a 35 minute wait due to the popularity of the restaurant, the food was worth waiting for. The sweet potato fries, BBQ burger, and various salads were of the highest quality and very fresh. Also the locally brewed beer is also a plus to go along with the food. Even though we're only here for a few days we'll probably go back.
