Top 10 Things to do in Lumbini, Western Region

November 16, 2021 Kaleigh Reichenbach

Lumbinī (Nepali and Sanskrit: लुम्बिनी  listen (help·info), "the lovely") is a Buddhist pilgrimage site in the Rupandehi District of Province No. 5 in Nepal. It is the place where, according to Buddhist tradition, Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in 563 BCE. Gautama, who achieved Enlightenment some time around 528 BCE, became the Buddha and founded Buddhism. Lumbini is one of many magnets for pilgrimage that sprang up in places pivotal to the life of the Buddha.

Maya Devi Temple

A holy place for every Buddhist, Lumbini and the ancient ruins are associated with the birthplace of Buddha.

Reviewed By T-Enchanted

This is a place of History. Prince Siddhartha Gautam was born here. The child who would later be the founder of one of the most prominent religions in the World. Lumbini is located in the Terai plains of southern Nepal close to the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This heritage place contains the Shakya tank, Monasteries, Ashoka Pillar, remains of the structure built in or much before the 3rd Century BC. Maya Devi, Queen Maya of Shakya Dynasty was the name of Buddha's mother. The Temple bears her name. The inside of the Temple has old ruins of the birthplace. Photography is not allowed here. One can quietly stand in a queue, pay respects once turn comes & leave quietly. The shakya tank is a pleasant sight. It has turtles & fish in it. Right behind the Tank is a grand old Tree around which the monks sit & meditate. The gardens surrounding the palace/Temple are lush & maintained beautifully. Lumbini is a sacred site and pilgrims from across the world come here to pay respects. I'm glad we visited this historical sacred place in the first leg of our Nepal Trip.

Peace Pagoda

We are a family of 8, with one toddler. Three of us went to peace pagoda on a trek from lakeside via boating for few meters first and then walking the rest of the trek uphill. Rest went via Toyota Hiace via road. How’s lever you reach, you need to trek uphill approx 450 stairs from the parking area - trek is not difficult but certainly tiring. Best part is when you reach the top and see the peace pagoda with Annapurna range clear view, snow clad mountains, fishtail and the overall environment is so peaceful and amazing to experience for sure! Once you reach - it is all worth your time and efforts.

The temple has a magnificent view from outside, same as other Korean temples. As some repair work was going on during our visit, we were unable to visit this temple inside.
