(OLDER THAN STONEHENGE) ??? (PHREHISTORC)????? WTF. There are more than 350 ancient monuments within a six mile radius of the village, with 150 of them being prehistoric. Monuments include standing stones, a henge monument, numerous cists, and a ‘linear cemetery’ comprising five burial cairns. Several of these, as well as many natural rocks, are decorated with cup and ring marks. forget southern England's offerings (FREE ADMISSION) apart from the museum at kilmartin,so what is around here things to do and see Crinan canal / Dunadd fort prehistoric Carnassarie castle and lots of other attractions soon to open after covid, get your walking boots on and take a walk back in history...

There are more than 800 prehistoric and historic monuments within 10 miles of Kilmartin Village. This extraordinary concentration and diversity of monuments distinguishes the Kilmartin Glen as an area of outstanding archaeological importance. It is one of Scotland’s richest prehistoric landscapes. The Museum Gallery and shop are closed at Kilmartin Museum for the duration of the Redevelopment Project during 2021 & 2022. In spring 2021 we will be opening a 'Pop-up' cafe on site which will have an outdoor seating area and information about places to visit in the Glen. Educational activities and guided walks will continue within Covid-19 guidelines, so please visit our website or Facebook page for further information on our activities and the Redevelopment Project.

A must if you want to understand the archaeology of Kilmartin Glen - interesting displays and a cafe and shop as well - good base from which to explore and offer guided walks of the local area too.

Well maintained & easy free access to stone circle. Best to visit the Kilmartin Glen Visitor Centre and Display to understand the layout and timeline of the various monuments.

This is one of three Nether Largie cairns in a line down the valley from the Glebe cairn which is just behind the Kilmartin Museum. You can park there and walk through the field to the path at the back or park further south and walk back. If I hadn't seen other people going inside, I would not have realised that you were allowed to. Normally they just don't let you get this close to pre-history, let alone climb all over it and inside it. A fence protects you from the horse in the field around it, though it looked friendly enough.
