Top 10 Things to do in Killarney, Province of Munster

March 11, 2022 Alice Mieles

Forget fashionable footwear, only your most comfortable shoes will cut it in Killarney. It's a walking town, and every trail is a history lesson. Journey on foot through Ireland's first national park, 26,000 acres of woodlands, sandstone mountains and low-lying lakes. When your feet wear out, take in Killarney National Park via boat from Ross Castle. And because there are more hotel beds in Killarney than in any other Irish town or city (besides Dublin), you'll always have a place to rest your head (and feet).

Prior to heading to Killarney for our Staycation I contacted Killarney Falconry & got a very prompt reply from Geoffrey detailing the experience & the prices... as I wanteed to be certain of doing this & you can never guarantee Irish weather we didn't book until we were on the ground, so to speak. The Weds forecast seemed the best so we booked and met John in a hotel carpark. We followed him to some woods down a very long lane & at last arrived at the destination - a wooded copse of trees. We then met Meeko the Harris hawk & each of us got multiple turns at having him fly to the gaunlet to feed. During the experience John entertained us with lots of info about falconry including the many terms that have migrated into the English language. And just when we though it was all over we got back to John's van and three fabulous owls were produced... each of us got a nuzzling owl on our gloved hand.. who knew these beautiful birds were so affectionate? It was the perfect end to one of the highlights of my existence....

Ladies' View

Reviewed By CultureVulture - Clinton, United States

Ladies' View was a welcomed stop, after driving the narrow, winding road through Killarney National Park and dodging large tour buses that seemed to occupy more than their traffic lane! The panoramic view of the Upper Lake and surrounding mountains from Ladies' View is magnificent. The view is even better from the elevated dining terrace of the Altitude Cafe, which prepares a surprisingly good selection of sandwiches and other dishes. It's easy to see why this was Queen Victoria's ladies-in-waiting favorite view of the Killarney Lakes when they visited in the mid-19th century.

Gap of Dunloe

We stayed at the airbnb, Dunloe Cottage, a short walk to Kate Kearney’s Cottage and Heather’s Cafe at the start of the Gap of Dunloe. The Cottage was spacious and magnificently presented and located a 10 minute drive from the Killarney town centre. Dan and Breda were welcoming and very accommodating. Highly recommend spending a few days in the Cottage as a base to explore the Gap, Black Valley and Killarney Lakes. Ideal for hikers/walkers, bike riders and rock climbers.
