Kapaa, also spelled Kapa'a, means "solid" in Hawaiian. Travelers find this small town, nestled at the base of Nounou (the Sleeping Giant) Mountain on Kauai tourist friendly with its diverse array of hotels, shopping centers, and restaurants. The Kinipopo Shopping Village is a favorite for its fun eateries and small keepsake shops. Look for the "Kauai Made" logo for products made by local craftsmen using traditional materials. Lydgate State Park is easy to get to from the main highway. It is very large and has plenty of room for extremely large crowds. It offers a nice beach where the sunbathers and swimmers have more than enough space to do their thing. Saw some people that were snorkeling. Above the beach is again an extremely large space for just putting out chairs and loungers. Plenty of room for a large or small picnic. You'll see some large lava formations out in the water, as well as, near the shore. Don't forget some heavy tides beating against the lava and shore. Restrooms and shower station are kept extremely clean. There is an area for children to play in a children area. Don't forget some hiking in a beautiful part of Kauai. There are plenty of chickens to make you feel at home.

My family heard about this from a friend. We decided to go and had a wonderful time. They give you instructions before you head up and safety instruction before you get in the water. It was a wonderful experience and would highly recommend this. Our group had 5 adults and everyone laughed and twirled in the intertubes. Afterwards we were provided a small lunch.

We most frequently walk from the Waipouli area up to the end of Kappa; but sometimes we've walked all the way to Kealia. Not too crowded & most folks are using the path for exercise or enjoyable bike/walk jaunts. There were a few locals hanging out around the bathrooms at the bridge just south of Pono Kai but they were not threatening.
Overall a nice safe place for all - including families with kiddos.
We also did one walk from Kealia Beach all the way to the north end at Anahola - that's our favorite stretch... not as many people and we saw whales & lots of sea birds.

Oh really is a shame the homeless situation. Walking along pristine beaches marred by the tents, garbage, crap left behind by the homeless. I walked in and out of one of the bathrooms. Yuck. You can be homeless and show some pride!

This turned out to be so much more than we expected. We boarded a tram which took us on a guided tour through an exquisite botanical garden. Shortly thereafter, one of the Smith Family members gave us some background as to who they were and how long they were in business. We watched two men uncover a pig which had been roasting for 9 hours! We were then invited to enjoy the luau. This was very efficiently handled as there were hundreds of people dining. Drinks were unlimited, (I mean booze)! as was the food. Tables of 40 were called up one by one and there were 6 lines leading to the buffet! The food was delicious and we were repeatedly reminded that both food and drink were unlimited. While we ate there was a small show. Coffee was served by waiters. Next, we went to the theater for the main show. Incredible is the word that comes to mind. Beautifully staged, great lighting, and wonderful music and dancing. Many countries and islands that contributed to Hawaii's culture were represented in song and dance. This was a fantastic experience and worth every penny!

The parking area is either right by the trailhead, or just a little ways farther across the bridge to the parking lot for the Keahua Arboretum. The trail can be slightly muddy in the beginning when it has rained, but otherwise moderate slope up to picnic area. The picnic table is under a roof and is on the top of a flat area, so that you can walk around getting views from different sides. Then go on past that area across the ridge and see more views! This trail joins up with the Moalepe Trail after the wooden bridge that looks like it has been there quite some time from the decay. Either hike down the Moalepe, which isn't that exciting or turn back.

Easy parking to see the Wailua River Overlook. Signage is located on the Overlook that explains this great river and its importance. Have fun and stay safe.

The monastery is slightly off the beaten path but well worth the 15 minutes or so to get there from the main road. There is a beautiful meditation area under a huge Banyan tree, a beautiful temple, and interesting gift shop with unusual jewelry and other items. But perhaps most interesting is the view across the valley to another temple. On a misty day, it looks like an apparition from another world.

Great hiking trail that is not too difficult when the trail is dry. Can be challenging when wet. First plateau has a few picnic tables and wonderful views. Go a little further and the “top” is awesome. There are two trails to the top, and both times we hiked it we used the main trail up.
