If you’re after a winter sports holiday, you can’t find a more gorgeous place to do it than Interlaken, the popular Swiss resort town. There’s superlative skiing, toboggan rides, miles of sledding tracks (which, like the ski slopes, vary in difficulty), snowboarding… all with amazing views of the mountains. In summer, hike among the ibex at nearby Neiderhorn, or shop for watches in the town’s boutiques.

In 2015 Mr Carl Cronje set out to create the landscaped gardens that is now one of the top attractions in Wilderswil. He personally re-designed and landscaped the gardens over a period of 2 years. Here you will find rose gardens, organic vegetables garden (used in the local restaurant), scented herb garden and nearly 20 tall forest trees. All with the stunning glaciers and mountains as backdrop.
I first stayed at this hotel in December 2016. It was amazing! The hotel really has that mountain feel about it which fits in with it's location surrounded by mountains. I then subsequently stay there in March 2018 during the Ski Week (which in itself is highly recommended) and again during the Ski Week in March 2019. I even persuaded my parents to join in March 2019 and they were impressed, even being such experienced travelers. I already have plans to stay at the Alpenrose again in March 2020 during their annual Ski Week. The Hotel Alpenrose is the perfect hotel for a holiday in the Jungfrau region of Switzerland. It is filled with history and interesting artifacts. The hotel has a lovely breakfast room where a buffet is served in the mornings. A good selection of cold meats, cheese and fruits are on offer as well as breads, warm drinks, fruit juice and a variety of cereals. There is also a lounge area which is great for some relaxation. In the evenings the restaurant is vibrant and fill of atmosphere. The food is very well priced yet is of a very high standard. I would highly recommend trying the rosti. The rooms are very clean and are fairly spacious with good views of the mountains. All of the staff are extremely friendly, efficient and offer great service. The location of Hotel Alpenrose is perfect for accessibility in terms of arriving and departing as well as accessing the Jungfrau Ski Region. The Wilderswil bus and train station is a few minutes walk from the hotel. From there you can easily go to Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwand and the ski areas on from those two villages. In the other direction you can easily access Interlaken and the main train stations of Interlaken Ost and Interlaken West. This makes the hotel extremely easy to access on arrival (I have arrived from Zurich, Frankfurt and Geneva). Similarly, onward travel after your stay is also very easy. For a good value for money hotel with great rooms and views, fabulous meals, superb staff and perfect location, the Hotel Alpenrose is the obvious choice.

At an altitude of 1,322 m, the Harder Kulm offers the best view of Interlaken, Eiger Mönch and Jungfrau as well as the Thun and Lake Brienz. The palatial restaurant and the Two Lakes Bridge viewing platform are an enticing place to spend time. The cable car, not far from the Interlaken Ost train station on the Harder, has been operational for more than 100 years. The Talstation building has remained without major alterations to the original design as it was in the early years after the turn of the century, and is one of Interlaken's listed buildings. For connoisseurs and those in search of a view, the Harder railway takes just ten minutes to reach the Interlaken Hausberg. The 1,449-metre mountain journey largely goes through the forest, surmounting 731 metres in altitude at an incline of 64%.
From very close to the town center you can take a funicular to the “Top of Interlaken” for stunning views of the 2 lakes and the landscape. It had rained earlier the day we went but had mostly cleared by the time we ventured out. Initially there were scattered clouds below us but they gradually disappeared...and then reappeared and disappeared again. Life in the mountains. A nice restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating and incredible views sits at the top after a short walk from the funicular terminal. The brave can opt to walk back down (2 1/2 hours I think it said) but it would have been slick that day.

Rugenbräu is an independent Swiss brewing company, headquartered in the lovely surrounds of Interlaken - "Between the lakes" in central Switzerland. In the year of 1866 in Interlaken, Christian Indermühle, started a brewery, from which his sons Carl and Albert eventually took over on his death in 1875. In 1880 after taking on too much debt the brothers converted the brewery into a public limited company, to help ease costs and the day to day running of the company. From there, in 1892, the brewery was acquired by the Bavarian brew-master Joesph Hofweber. Hofweber already owned the successful Schloss Reichenbach brewery and eventually in 1968 the name Rugenbräu was given to the long standing family brewery, which has remained in family ownership for well over a hundred years. Picturesque park in the center of town. Snow capped mountains in the background, stunning flowers in the spring. This is the landing spot for paragliders, and it's very fun to watch!

I returned here in September 2019 after having first visited as a child in 1968. It was even bigger and more impressive than I remembered. It's a small castle off the beaten path form either Interlaken or Wilderswil, but it is wonderful to climb around and explore. No gift shops or glitzy exhibits...just a honest to goodness historical site with just enough information to give you perspective, but not too much to inhibit your imagination.
