Hopewell Riverwalk

Love coming here all of the time to walk or swim or just sit and look at the water and activity going on in the area. Very quiet area other than the occasional boat or children on the newly updated playground. There is also a sandy beach area where you can swim or just sit to enjoy the view directly near the Riverwalk. I come here very often and it is lovely every time.

Weston Plantation

Reviewed By W1702PJmarkg - Catonsville, United States

Weston Plantation dates to 1735, the home itself was built in 1789, and it is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of only two surviving 18th century plantation homes still standing on the Appomattox River. The other is Battersea Plantation in Petersburg, Virginia. Weston is described as a classic example of Virginia Georgian architecture and the very essence of the Tidewater plantation home. Much of the original interior, moulding, chair rails, and wainscoting has been preserved as well as the spiral stairway with concave paneling. The fireplaces and craftmanship around them is exquisite while the dark wood, brick and low ceilings in the cellar remind you of an old English tavern. There is a reconstructed summer kitchen and laundry and a long pier down the hillside out into the Appomattox River. There is a small gift shop and Weston is avaliable for events of all kinds and hosts a spring/summer music series on the lawn. My wife and I would also like to thank our docent, Janis for our extended personal tour. She was so personable, knowledgeable, funny and genuine and we enjoyed learning about this beautiful home she obviously takes great pride in.

The Beacon Theater

As we were traveling thru the area for vacation, we saw that one of our favorite classic country groups would be performing at The Beacon Theater, and we are so happy that we chose this as a concert destination. The property has been perfectly preserved; however, includes updated sound and light technology. The staff was friendly to boot! The concert line-up includes some really quality acts of all genres so don’t discount downtown Hopewell, VA for your next music memory.

General Grant's Headquarters at City Point

Reviewed By WC-Travelers-75

We did the Eastern and Western Front Driving Tours before visiting Grant's HQ ending up here late afternoon. If I had known that this site was really the start of the siege and battle, I should have started the visit here. The video and the diorama really help to understand the logistics which led to a Union Army victory. A ranger was available to answer questions. A brief tour of restored rooms on the first floor is available. The restored Appomattox Plantation building and grounds are beautiful, overlooking the James River and worth a stroll. Don't miss the rustic replica of Grant's cabin.
