QUEST ROOM

Reviewed By Nevinli158 - Sunnyvale, United States

Going through and updating my old reviews as we move them over to our new stack rank website, theroomrank.com! Check it out to see how these rooms compare to the other 125+ rooms we've done across the United States. Quest Room is still my go to example when describing very unique and surprising moments in escape rooms. While the sets have gotten a little less impressive after 13th gate, they're still top notch and very immersive. Perfumer - 4/5. Perfumer is still easily the best quest room in LA, and has held up due to its great set and story despite its relative lack of quest room moments. The puzzles are a bit sketchy and hold the room back a bit. Red Giant - 4/5. Despite Red Giant being a weaker game than some of the other Quest rooms, it's packed with Quest Room moments, and as such is ranked higher than the rest of them except Perfumer. (Previous Reviews) I've done over 90 escape rooms across SF, Seattle, New Orleans, and now finally LA. The rooms I've seen (especially in LA) can generally be split into two camps: you have the more traditional puzzle oriented rooms that have pretty interesting puzzles with generally less good set design/immersion, and then you have the amazing set design/immersion rooms that have generally less good puzzles. Quest Room falls staunchly in the second camp of rooms, but is perhaps the best company in the area for this style of room. Quest Room rooms are 2nd generation with close to no locks, and have great sets and very weird (but awesome) immersive moments coupled with fetch quest puzzles. Do not expect too many brain teasers in these rooms, since most of the puzzles are of the instruction manual variety, where the puzzle is finding the correct object A to place in location B. Granted, there are a smattering of more complicated puzzles in the room, but they're few and far inbetween. As for the weird moments, I don't know if it's the Russian influence (since the owner is Russian) or what, but Quest Room's defining characteristic is that they have a bunch of sketchy things in their rooms that traditional escape rooms don't have due to what most likely are safety concerns. These moments are very surprising/memorable, and define what Quest Rooms are about to me. Red Giant - 4/5. This is probably the quintessential Quest Room: the set was pretty good, the puzzles (or lackthereof) was very disappointing, the story was thin, but there were three distinct Quest Room moments in the room, and they were all pretty great. The first one was fairly standard and wasn't interactive: being more of the "this was a step up from implementations of this I've seen in other escape rooms, but also seems like it could cause some really dumb people who weren't following instructions to get injured" variety. The second one was the best one of the bunch, causing us to panic and frantically do something as a response. The third one is the most memorable moment out of all the Quest Rooms: it's not particularly crazy, but we definitely stood around for a minute thinking "Wait, are we actually supposed to do this?" These moments alone made me overlook the rest of the shortcomings of the room since I've legitimately never experienced moment #3 in the other 90 rooms I've done, and the only time I've experienced something on the level of #1/2 are in the 13th gate rooms (which to set expectations, are much larger in scope and budget than this room). Come for the crazy moments and good set, but skip if you need a story/puzzles in your escape rooms. The set was pretty well done for an Ancient Egypt set and amplified by the quest room moments. Not quite at the level of 13th Gates Tomb of Anubis (though what really is), but still way better than most ancient egypt sets I've seen. There wasn't much of a story: you're trying to find the red giant, and you do random things to get you deeper and deeper into the tomb without much purpose or reason to find the red giant, and oh look, you've found the red giant! (or have you?) Given the focus on set/immersion, it would have been nice to have a story with more plot points like Perfumer, but eh. The puzzles were pretty weak even by Quest Room standards, as they were mostly fetch quest related, and didn't even have interesting physical elements like Bloody Elbow: I think this room is tied with Party Hard for my least favorite puzzles. Perfumer - 4/5. My favorite Quest Room of the bunch. This room just had a great story and game flow, making the game the most immersive out of the bunch. Be warned that the game gets pretty dark in subject matter fairly quickly in, so don't expect a whimsical and light hearted adventure that you would expect if you missed the word "dark" in the games description. The game gives you definite goals as you progress throughout the room that give you a feeling of accomplishment when you complete them, there is a significant twist to the story, and there is a satisfying ending sequence to the room. Set and props were good as always. There are two Quest Room moments in the room, though they were more set design related rather than actual moments. The first was just a legitimately cool way to get into another room. The second was a starkly different set that made for awesome immersion, but had close to no practical purpose in the actual game. I was really surprised that they dedicated that amount of space for just tens of seconds of experience, but it that's Quest Room for you. The puzzles were middle of the road - they felt a bit more interesting than the weaker offerings like Party Hard, but as a whole still felt a bit too fetch questy. Player Count Recs: Both games are fairly linear, so 2-3 for enthusasts, 4 or so for beginners. Personal Stats: With a group of 2 enthusiasts... Escaped Perfumer in ~65 mins taking 3 or so hints. Escaped Red Giant in ~45 mins taking 2 or so hints.

Fonda theatre

This place was not in the best area of LA, a tiny bit run down, but the theater has a goth feel to it which we loved. My husband and I had balcony seats which was great for us older kids. We had a great time! The only thing that sucked was that it cost $15 for a beer. That's why we had beers at the brew house next door before we went in. If you can get floor tickets , you will have a great experience!
