The mine is electrically lit over 135 metres walk-in and an optional 7 ladder climb out to the surface or walk back the way you came in. For full details visit the look up History Hill at Hill End. Please note:- we are open every weekend. Also all NSW School holidays and public holidays or by appointment. Normal opening hours are from 10 am to 4 pm.
Fascinating museum packed full of artefacts from the Australian gold rush at Hill End, along with objects of intrigue from the time, all enhanced by eccentric and personal notes from the owner. We came on a quiet day and Malcolm opened specially for us, telling us plenty about Hill End at its height and the main players. We couldn't have asked for more. There is also a mine, which we didn't visit owing to the weather.

Awesome museum and fantastic that it was open on a public holiday. We learnt a lot and the way that the items were presented was really interesting.

A dirt road drive takes you to a lookout named after the photographer who has left the history of Sofala. The views show the amazing depths plumbed by miners to over 200m in depth.

I found walking through the gully created by the erosion caused by the mining for gold very exhilarating with many photographic opportunities.
