The River & Rowing Museum, set by the river in picturesque Henley on Thames, brings the river, rowing and the arts to life in a series of stunning galleries and temporary exhibitions. The Museum, housed in stunning oak clad building designed by award winning architect David Chipperfield, is home to the UK's only gallery dedicated to the work of prolific British artist John Piper. Families are welcomed to the Museum, and the permanent Wind in the Willows walk through experience is enormously popular with visitors of all ages! Hosting an ever changing series of temporary exhibitions, there is always something new to see at the Museum and their annual pass tickets provide fantastic value for money.
This was a welcome stopping point, on a journey to Oxford. It is an award-winning purpose-built museum, just by the Thames, devoted to boating and river-related activities. It is a great place to eat. For little kids there is a walk-through section that brings the Wind in the Willows to life. For older 'kids' there are historic boats from past rowing events, an amazingly preserved Saxon dugout, even a skiff the Three Men in a Boat might have used. For art buffs there a special gallery devoted to the paintings of John Piper, who lived nearby. It's worth mentioning we got in free with our Art Fund passes - but otherwise it was reasonably priced; and the shop was a delight. Has its own free car park. We thoroughly enjoyed our couple of hours there.

What a down to earth character Lord Nuffield must have been - the house is in no way grand and, unfortunately, it does look in need of rather a lot of TLC (I'm sure the many flat roofs don't help.) The interiors are comfortable and homely rather than grand and you could almost be walking into your grandparents house. The only nod to grandeur is the Billiards Room which is in a wing on its own and the tool cupboard in his Lordship's bedroom gives a fascinating insight to the restless nature of the man. Really interesting

High up in the Chiltern hills, Warburg Nature Reserve is a magnificent place for its wild, remote tranquillity. The flower-rich grasslands in the valley bottom give way to grand woodlands rising up the valley sides.Warburg is home to an incredible range of habitats sheltering thousands of species, and each season there is something interesting to experience. In spring, the woodland is awash with spectacular bluebells and wood anemones. In May and June the reserve has a dawn chorus second to none. The wide sunny rides and open glades of chalk grassland are full of summer flowers, including pyramidal orchid and swathes of aromatic wild marjoram and thyme. These are followed by autumn and Chiltern gentians and glorious colours throughout the tree canopy, while down below, an incredible 900 species of fungi grow. In winter, you can enjoy magical frost along the valley bottom.
We love walking and nature. We loved the Warburg Nature Reserve. How wonderful that the woodland trust and their volunteers maintain places like this for us all to enjoy.

Said to be the world’s best known regatta, Henley’s remains a firm favourite in the social diary for those who love one of England’s most loved pastimes, rowing. Taking place on the River Thames, Henley Royal Regatta draws in the classic English gent, those wanting to experience a slice of authentic British life, and even the odd Olympian. Spanning two wars, this five-day event has taken place each year since 1839, over the first weekend in July, and consists of 200 races that are around a mile long each. As part of the ‘English social season’ the event comes with a strict dress code so it’s a jolly good excuse to dress up, pack the cucumber sandwiches, and break out the Pimms.

On a few days break from the grind we took ourselves off to Henley-on-Thames, the Thames path is a wonderful way to explore the river and to watch the world go by. We took a picnic and found a lovely shaded spot in view of the river and the many boats that pass. You must walk up to one of the many locks to watch the boats passing through.
