Harlow is a former Mark One New Town and local government district in the west of Essex, England. Situated on the border with Hertfordshire, it occupies a large area of land on the south bank of the upper Stort Valley, which has been made navigable through other towns and features a canal section near its watermill. Old Harlow is a village-size suburb founded by the early medieval age and most of its high street buildings are early Victorian and residential, mostly protected by one of the Conservation Areas in the district. In Old Harlow is a field named Harlowbury, a de-settled monastic area which has the remains of a chapel, a scheduled ancient monument.

A large, very beautiful, modern church with a wealth of stained glass and pews ranged around three sides of the altar. I felt very welcomed and accepted the blessing as an Anglican Catholic whose church was shut during the pandemic in early January. The demographic was inspiring with its range of ethnicity and ages, from preschool to pensioner. The congregation approached fity communicants during the pandemic on a bitterly cold Sunday. Quod erat demonstrandum. Even when my own church of St Mary Magdalene reopens, I shall continue to visit and adore.

St Paul's was conceived as part of the original Master Plan for Harlow new town. Designed by Derrick Humphrys, it was consecrated in April 1959. Its copper covered spire surmounted by a golden cross rises 95 feet. Internal features include the original brightly coloured furnishings designed by R.W. Hurst, the decorative colour scheme and the imposing John Piper mosaic of the Risen Christ at Emmaus

The Echo sculpture can be seen as you travel along Southern Way. It is on a small hill. You can park up at Staple Tye shopping centre if you want to get a little closer. I would recommend downloading the Sculpture map from Harlow Borough Council to get accurate directions for finding the many sculptures in the town.

I absolutely love the Gibberd Gardens, it’s like entering Narnia, a far cry from 21st Century Harlow. A beautiful walk around and a lovely way to pass an afternoon. Haven’t checked the tea rooms out yet but hoping to return before Autumn is over.

A farm yard atmosphere with a range of domesticated animals and some exotics. FREE ENTRY with a donation box and a gift shop where the monies from these contribute to the running.
This is a beautifully run area of Harlow Park with farm animals, pets and exotic fish and reptiles to interest children of all ages. My grandchildren are always enchanted. The information presented means it is also very educational.
