Great Bend was named for its location on the Arkansas River. There are vast plains, a national scenic byway that included enormous wetlands of international importance (Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira NWR) and the Arkansas River to explore. Located on the Santa Fe Trail, Great Bend is the birthplace of organized drag racing and the boyhood home of a Nobel Prize winner. The Raptor Center at Brit Spaugh Zoo houses raptors, byway exhibits and educational programming.

Exceeded all expectations. Nicely done around a natural body of water. If one stops the car, the birds offer a cacophony of sound. Ducks diving for food, sea gulls gliding, herons near the shore looking for food. The Best thing is the welcome center. VERY nicely appointed, modern, clean. Excellent displays, and even live animals for representation. Different snakes that live in the area, turtles, skinks, salamanders, all alive and can be seen. I had read about several of the snakes, but had never seen them alive. Great. Nice display of the history of the Bottoms, from 12000 years ago to present, and how they managed to "save" the Bottoms. Well worth the visit. Nice memorabilia shop, relatively inexpensive Dependant on what you buy. Lots of free stuff also. Nice post cards, some with original photos taken by locals, etc. Is also on the Kansas Bucket List. And that is why we went, my wife of 18 years has been diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, and this was on her list. Why we waited so long, I will never know. Well worth the drive and time. Take time and listen, look and feel

If you have never been there before it's a must to visit the Wetlands Education Center.
You will find out about the wildlife and will be able to experience the Cheyenne Bottoms which is one of the wetlands that is still in existence due to some years of drought in Kansas and in some of the other states.

Everytime I visit, this zoo gets better and better! For being in a small town, they have several of my favorite large animals that I normally have to go to several zoos to see. They have a tiger, lions, grizzly bears, a black bear, leopards, and the list just goes on. The staff is friendly and I enjoy stopping in here.

Went to this farm with a bunch of my friends and we all loved it! Reserve a whole day to do it, because there's so much to do! They sell burgers and hotdogs at the end of the apple picking and popcorn and egg rolls where you pick up pumpkins and berries. There's a huge maze, oh and also, safe some time at the end of the day to go to any of the 5 miles within a 5 mile radius!!! Overall, love this place, would love to go again soon.

At vets lake there is always something going on from family reunions to 5ks. The lake is nice size however no swimming or boating is allowed. Trout fishing is allowed during the season with a fishing license. There are walking trails, playgrounds, sand and mud volleyball areas, a fenced dog park that is very popular and some nice scenic bridges and swings for photo ops. All season long its the perfect place to go think.

The B-29 Memorial Plaza is just outside of town near the airport. It is all outside and has a miniature model of a B-29 and some history regarding the importance of the aircraft to the area and to WWII. It’s a quick stop and worth it for veterans and/or history buffs.
