Salt River Canyon Scenic Drive

This was a spectacular 5 mile ride into the canyon with breath taking views on a long windy road that certainly rivals the Grand Canyon. My wife and I took several breaks on this scenic road. I'm not one for big drop offs and this has them but the road down and up is an amazing engineering feat that we certainly appreciate.

Besh Ba Gowah

Welcome to Besh Ba Gowah, the heartland of the Salado people. Here visitors will see the partially restored ancient ruin of the Salado people who occupied the site between A.D. 1225 and A.D. 1400. Enjoy the self guided tour of the village which allows visitors to experience the mysteries of those who came before. The adjacent museum provides a fascinating glimpse at prehistoric pottery, stone and woven artifacts excavated from the site and a video interpreting the lifestyle of the people who occupied this region over two centuries before Columbus discovered the 'New World.' A seasonal ethno-botanical garden provides information about and showcases plants used by the people who made this desert landscape their home.

This place is an archeological wonder that would interest anyone who enjoys history and visiting historical ruins.
It was built and settled by Pueblo Indians. But exactly who they were, where they came from to settle here and what they called themselves is unknown.
Like so many ancient culture people, they had to abandon this site and move on after a multi year drought.
However, this site was in its time a well traveled trade center. Imagine people were traveling here for hundreds of miles to trade goods!
See the short video, walk the grounds and visit the museum.
If you come to Globe, this is a must see.
Five Stars!

Pickle Barrel Trading Post

Reviewed By Rainbo1 - Tucson, Arizona

Just spent five and a half hours driving up to Globe and back to Tucson to specifically shop at the Pickle Barrel Trading Post. What a dump! It's chock full of second and third tier Southwestern Indian art. I was not at all impressed with their pottery, weaving, and basketry merchandise. Their silver and turquoise jewelry selection was only marginally better. The store is dark and dingy and filled to the rafters with kitsch. If your only purpose of visiting Globe, AZ is to shop at this store, STAY HOME! On the other hand if you like shopping at second-hand stores you'll probably enjoy the Pickle Barrel.

The drive into Globe from Tucson is quite scenic and relaxing if you can be content to be stuck behind slow moving RVs. There are very few safe passing opportunities.

I was really pleasantly surprised by this collection. Wide range from quilts to photography to paintings, many for sale (and quite reasonable). Definitely worth a stop if you are in town, you can get through pretty quickly, but worth doing. The building itself is a beautiful historic structure with copper accents inside, also really neat to see. Make a stop if you're in town.

Old Dominion Historic Mine Park

The Old Dominion Mine Park is a unique, not-to-be-missed, community gem that is both educational and fun. There are things for people of all ages to enjoy, including a mining-themed playground, signs about history and geology/mining, old mining artifacts, hiking trails, 9-hole disc golf course, and picnic pavilions. We hope you’ll come walk through history with us!

Worth the trip if only for the family park with mine-themed equipment. Two pavilions and easy access to parking makes this great for a group outing. If you want to see more just prepare to hike. Take the Interloper Loop to see the iconic tall equipment but I'm not sure I would spend the effort again as you're still held back from quite a distance. Overall an extremely well done park and nicely organized history exhibit.

Round Mountain Park

Beautiful high desert hiking. We visited this afternoon and it was partly cloudy and very mild (January in Arizona). There is plenty of parking at the visitor center as well as bathrooms. We hiked the west trail, and really enjoyed a moderate climb. They have ramadas with tables and benches here and there if you need to rest or want to picnic. It has a wealth of high desert beauty with some plant life with signage. I really appreciated their map system (on signs, and you can get one online and print to hand-carry which is what we did). It is nicely developed, well-marked and athletic shoes did just fine. I do recommend bringing water, and be sure to pack trash out, I didn't see any trash cans along the trail. There is a barred walk through so bicycles and horses can't use the trails. It is a really beautiful park, and close to many of the best Mexican restaurants in the state!

The Globe Historic District is probably worth a visit just to see what happens to towns when the main employers (in this case the mines) shut down.

There are a few interesting building with faded storefronts. Mostly it is a rundown, decrepit old mainstream. There are a lot of boarded up stores. Most of the rest are little more than Goodwill recycling shops. Some rough looking bars that probably have some interesting character, but we weren't about to find out.

We were looking for a place to stop and have a few beers and a bite to eat. They don't serve food however, you just ask for a menu and the La Casita Cafe halfway down the block will deliver right to your table!
The beer was cold and cheap. The people were engaging and fun to be around! They made you feel welcome from the time you entered until the time you left! There are so many unique items and signs hanging all over!
This is a must stop when you come to Globe!!
