The museum's four floors of world-class exhibits provide a chance to explore and discover the best of Maine, from the Ice Age to the 1960s. The museum is open from Tuesday - Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays and all state holidays.
We spent over three hours touring this outstanding museum and learned a lot bout the State of Maine. It was a very informative and educational experience. It is very well laid out to show the history and the making of Maine. I would recommend this museum to anyone even if you are not a native Mainer.

Trail is paved from Gardiner to Augusta, Maine.
We have walked this trail many times & always enjoy the river views! The bikers usually are always courteous! Ringing their bell acknowledges to us that they are about to pass when they approach behind us. The view of the river gives everyone a better education! I have now learned about how far inland the tide affects the river, watched eagles catch fish & watch the protected sturgeons jump! It really is a great place to be outside!

Pork belly with fresh brussel sprouts served on Brie mashed potatoes! I was expecting lower grade pub food but was pleasantly amazed. Hubby had vodka cured salmon with a mango/coconut milk purée. Our friends had a ribeye and the prime rib. Beautifully prepared w/ great flavor. Desserts and beers were lovely also. I'll go again!

The Capitol is located out of town facing a fantastic parkland lined with trees. Parking is free as is entry to the Capitol. We did the self tour because we had just missed the start of the guided tour -sometimes it's better to take things at your own pace.
The architecture is great and the surrounding area is very well kept. It was great to see into the Senate chamber and the hall of Representatives. Don't miss the great views from the second storey.

Beautiful area in downtown Gardiner, Maine with a public boat launch, boardwalk, boat slips, fishing and picnic area.
While it can get busy at times, it is mostly quiet. This riverside park is a nice place in Gardiner to unwind and relax. There is a public boat launch here, so there is some action and its great to overhear what people are saying to each other as they finish up a day fishing or boating. Many workers from downtown Gardiner come down here to enjoy their lunch. Great views of the river as it flows by!

Home of the country's oldest wooden garrison building, built in 1754, Old Fort Western is a living history museum offering tours to groups and individuals, engaging hands-on activities and unique interactive experiences involving the history of the Kennebec Valley and New England during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
This place is for history buffs that are into what happened over two hundred years ago in Augusta Maine. The upkeep is reasonable. It does give you a picture of how things used to be.

To be surrounded by beautiful objects is a pure joy. When we find art or craft that we truly love and are able to see it, use it, and feel it everyday, we experience that joy. Monkitree offers art and craft from artists in Maine and throughout the United States and Canada.
Most of the crafts in this pleasant shop are made in Maine, and many are unique. There's jewelry, graphic art by local artists, housewares/linens, and cards. I bought a very attractive set of hors d'oeuvres serving pieces--a cheese knife, an olive fork, and a spreader--made of shiny stainless steel with handles fashioned of stacked gray and black rocks. The store owner is helpful but nonintrusive. Definitely worth a look!

Visit the Harlow Gallery in the heart of historic Hallowell on the Kennebec River, home to the Kennebec Valley Art Association) The KVAA has been promoting the arts and artists of central Maine since 1958. We are a membership-based 501(c)3 non-profit currently serving over 300 members. We value and encourage all artists, and art for all ages, believing that everyone can benefit from the arts. Come see our latest art exhibition when you visit Hallowell! At the Harlow, we strive to present a broad and inclusive selection of the art being created in Maine today; art by promising or under-appreciated artists; art from a range of approaches, disciplines, and subject matter, including political or contemporary art that some may find challenging; and shows that have the potential to appeal to new audience (recent examples would be exhibitions dealing with issues of domestic violence, mental illness, global warming, and our society’s love affair with the automobile). Besides art exhibitions, we present monthly ArtTalks, plus arts workshops and classes and other special events of interest to artists and art lovers.
The Harlow Gallery celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Under the excellent direction of Deb Fahy and Nancy Barron a visitor to the gallery will find a rotating series of presentations that not only bring big city art to this charming city on the banks of the Kennebec River but also support and nurture local artists. The Gallery also serves as a focal point for local school art programs that develop an up and coming generation of artists and collectors. Worth a trip if you are looking for excellent art in places other than the Coast of Maine.
The Harlow is situated downtown and diverse food and shopping is immediately available.
