Top 10 Things to do in Garachico, Canary Islands

April 21, 2022 Dorsey Hagwood

Garachico is a municipality and town on the northern coast of Tenerife, about 52 km West of the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 50 km from Tenerife North Airport and 67 km from Tenerife South Airport. The town itself nestles below a 500m+ (1500 ft) cliff. Garachico and the surrounding area is arguably the least spoilt coastal area of Tenerife, and is in sharp contrast to areas such as Playa de las Americas. It is still very Spanish in character, and a Spanish phrasebook is advisable for non-Spanish speaking visitors.

pre-amble- We went during COVID, and so places were marked out for sunbathing with tape and we had to pre-book on an app. A lady in a local shop told us that the app was a new thing- will it stay post-COVID?? No idea! The app also gave you a restricted time of 2hrs with a QR code that was checked on the door- get there a little early if you can. This is a really great place to go for "family-splash" swimming, although it is deep water, so you have to be comfortable out of your depth. I can well imagine this the water will get cold and rough- it really crashes into the rocks on a calm day. Situated right in the middle of the town on the main road, there is parking (but not loads) nearby an also a regular public swimming baths if you want to do lengths or more formal swimming. These are sea-fed ocean pools that come with crabs, sea weed and anything else the ocean washes up, although we found the water to be very clean. There are kind-of 2 sections, the main long pool and the terrace which has access to the ocean itself. Photos of both are included. I do think the open ocean bit would need you to be quite a good swimmer, it was rough and deep on what was otherwise a lovely hot day. We took reef shoes, which are very useful in very hot or on stony beaches- and they were very useful here, many people were using them. There are also some good diving places ranging from 1 metre to about 3 metres high, just take a lead from the locals where to go and wait your turn! There are steps into the water for those (like me) who don't like diving and you can cling onto the rocks in various places too. There are loos that are easily big enough to get changed in and general info about water temp and weather conditions, which is useful. The whole thing, which is free and council-run, does have a slight cheek-by-jowel feel to it, and the paved terraces (some of which are covered) are very hard and not good to lie on, and get very hot. Be prepared (in normal times) to be very close to other people and not have much room to yourself- but that's not why you are here! It is life-guarded, which is good, and you will have to be courteous to other bathers!

We ran across this shop by accident because we were trying to get to the main road from one block inland and cut through a pretty courtyard to do it - only to discover this hidden gem of a tobacco shop. If you aren't looking for it, you probably will miss it. Inside is a mom and pop shop, where dad rolls cigars and mom runs the register. They claim they only sell their cigars in the shop and not out on the town. Prices are reasonable and the cigars are a pleasant flavorful smoke. Not bitter. I wish I had purchased more! Limited English - best to converse in Spanish.
