With its plentiful beaches, dramatic mountains, and backdrop of samba and bossa nova rhythms, it's easy to fall in love with Rio de Janeiro. Made famous in song, Ipanema Beach is still the place to stroll, sunbathe, and be seen. The largest Art Deco statue in the world, Christ the Redeemer, beckons visitors to Corcovado Mountain. Rio’s annual Carnaval celebrations are bacchanalian extravaganzas of feasting, music, dance, and costumed revelry.

Unidos da Tijuca Samba-School, the third oldest samba school in Rio de Janeiro has been presenting an interesting all year long attraction: “Backstage Tour of a Carnival Parade”This is the first time a samba-school in Rio “opens up” their secrets, and guide tourist through the backstage activities. Tourists are guided by the official Carnival researcher of the Samba school and see all phases of the carnival parade preparation. The attraction starts with the explanation of the parade theme, and then moves on to each step of the parade building: the conception of theme, design sketches of the costumes, mock-up floats, the floats assembly area , carnival costume factory, and finally the quality area. At the end of the program, visitors see a pocket show of the samba-school, with real samba dancers and samba percussionists. The attraction is a very good option where the foreigner can learn a bit how the magic of the carnival in Rio is done. Definitely, a must if the visitors is interested in visual arts, architecture or carnival itself. The “Backstage Tour at Unidos da Tijuca” attraction lasts for 2 and half hours and can be scheduled Mondays through Saturdays through Unidos da Tijuca Marketing Department.

In 1811 a new pier, named "Cais do Valongo", was built for the landing and trading of enslaved Africans (mainly from Congo and Angola). Through this quay, more than 500.000 Africans arrived in Brazil. Sad memories of slavery ... Over the years, the quay undergone some transformations, one of them, in 1843, to welcome the Italian Princess Thereza Christina de Bourbon e Duas Sicílias, the last Brazilian Empress. Thereafter the pier was renamed on her honor as "Cais da Imperatriz". In 2017, it was appointed as a world heritage site by Unesco - a very good reason to visit it! While strolling along beautiful "Boulevard Olímpico", "Cais do Valongo" is just two blocks away. Enjoy!

I stumbled upon this gem when I was doing research on museums dedicated to the Africans who were viciously and violently brought to brazil against their well. Given that you cannot fully understand Brazilian history without understanding their long history with slavery, I thought there would be numerous museums dedicated to this subject. However, as I started to plan my itinerary, I realized that I was sorely mistaken. It wasn't until an hour into my research did I find this gem. The IPN Museum tells the often forgotten story of slavery....a story that the government would most want to forget. It starts with an informational video that cannot be missed and then a tour of the mass graves of the slaves who were not given the decency of a proper resting place. At the end, I asked the woman who showed us in about the homeowners' who selflessly donated the home upon discovering the graves and it turned out that she was their daughter! Through my tears, I thanked her for the important work they are doing. It really affirmed my belief that one person (or one family in this case) can make a difference. From what I understand, they do not get government funding and lack the resources to market the museum to a mass audience. They rely on word of mouth so please tell everyone you know to visit AND then write a review on google and/or tripadvisor. No matter your race, nationality or heritage, this museum should not be missed.

It wasn't Riley's Aquarium or anything else but it was an amazing experience nonetheless. I see reviews complaining about the organization/collection but it was beautiful. They had a massive main tank where you can go underwater, and a gorgeous collection of fish of all colors and sizes. Its a great family activity with plenty of activities for kids and virtual aquariums. you can learn tond about different species and what not.
