We were in Farmville to bike the High Bridge rail trail. While I was researching what to do in Farmville I came across this museum. It sounded intriguing, but I was expecting a dusty, small town museum with a few artifacts (I actually love those kind of museums, so that was not a deterrent for me). But what we found was so impressive, interesting and engaging. It really expanded our understanding of the Brown vs. The Board of Education. For one thing, I didn't realize that there were 4 different school districts rolled into the Brown case, of which Moton school was one. Secondly, you get a very personalized -- how a few people can galvanize a community -- what a difference leadership makes -- how heroic and dangerous it is to take a stand against the power structure -- you see all of this through the Moton school strike and the eventual involvement of NAACP lawyers. You also get to see the machinations of the white community and the lengths they were willing to go to not bend to integration. I barely think of Virginia as the South, but this could have been Mississippi. All public chools closed in Farmville for 5 years in order to evade the federal order to integrate after Brown became law. It's an excellent museum that tells both their local story and the larger story of which they were a part. I would say this is actually well worth a detour to visit. The Museum is in the old Moton high school, complete with "Boys" and "Girls" signs on the now public bathrooms. The exhibits are well done and informative. They also have an excellent visitor center/bookstore/gift shop that is well stocked with books on this and related subjects. I came expecting there would be maybe 30 minutes of things to see, but left 1.5 hours later feeling lucky to be able to learn more about this piece of history.

The store was closed for Covid-19, but the ladies opened the door and let us peruse. We watched them in their clay room, they teach classes on how to make pottery and other neat items. We bought some homemade coffee mugs and statuaries. he store is a popular area for the locals to do some art. Looks like alot of fun.

Please make sure you go on the bridge......then go underneath! Your mind will be blown! Soooo cooler under.....two ways to get there....one trail by the old earthen Confederate fort and a gravel side trail, both connect..... perfect place for a picnic!
