Alexandroupoli's Lighthouse

Reviewed By saronic - Zurich, Switzerland

Just as the White Tower for Thessaloniki so its Lighthouse is the landmark or symbol of Alexandroupolis. The 27m high circular tower had been constructed by a French company in 1880, thus still in Ottoman days, but also at a time, when the harbour was being built. Usually in one's imagination Lighthouses are seen on promontories and capes, but here it is in the middle of a straight, pretty level coastline, thus in a quite unusual location.
The lighthouse cannot be visited, but it is in a nice area to hang around with several cafés, bars and restaurants,
Tripadvisor has two entries for this sight: 'Alexandroupoli's Lighthouse' and 'Lighthouse of Alexandroupoli', which naturally is the same.

Dadia Forest

Reviewed By Waxwing60 - Leeds, United Kingdom

We spent two full days walking the wonderful trails through beautiful pristine forest. The staff at the Information Centre were very helpful and friendly, and the hand-outs very well produced and written in good English. The signage on the trails was about the best we have ever experienced. The added attraction of a vulture feeding station was a unique bonus. We really had to tear ourselves away from this great place.

Art of Silk Museum

In the Art of Silk Museum you will be guided through the exhibits in the carefully restored neoclassical building. The exhibits are in working order and the visitor will be able to get a taste of what it meant to work in the silk industry from silk reeling and processing machines to weaving with both hand and power looms. Alongside the exhibits there are videos demonstrating the various stages in the manufacture of silk from sericulture (the rearing of silkworms) to the finished product. The aim of the Art of Silk Museum is to highlight and preserve the rich tradition of silk weaving and production in the area. Original exhibits combined with the latest technology take the visitor, step by step, on a journey as unique as silk itself.

If you have driven all the way from the UK almost to the Turkish border you may be surprised to come upon an English lady giving tours in a Greek museum, but such is the Art of Silk museum in Soufli. If you want to know all about silk production, see the fascinating machines used and buy something truly unique to take home this is the definitely worth a stop. We enjoyed it greatly and went home with some wonderful hand embroidered silk. And when you have almost spent up there are several nice cafes nearby. Recommended.

Silk Museum

The Silk Museum in Soufli presents all the phases and the stages of the pre-industrial process of rearing silkworms (sericulture) and of silk processing (silk manufacturing) within the socio-economic context that made the region a major silk-producing center in Greece (late 19th – mid-20th century).

As I have already been there lots of times, we went to a hiking trip once more. We went from the second path and returned from the easier one. Both were mildly difficult routes, only small children might encounter some small difficulties. Sun is not a big problem as in most of the time you will be covered from the shade of the trees. We didn't know and did not bring binoculars with us when we reached the sighting spot. We were told that if we had some problem we would have to call the staff, although none of us had mobile connection in the forest most of the time. I can't wait to visit it again and see the ruins of the castle, available on another path.

Didymoteichio Castle

Reviewed By Telkontar - Illinois

The kastro in Didymoteicho is what remains of a significant regional fortification. If you're following Byzantine or Ottoman history it is definitely somewhere you should visit. Although much of the site has been ruined and robbed-out for other buildings over the years it is well worth a visit. The view is fabulous. The path is easy enough, though it is on a slope. It is a nice place for a walk.
