Formerly the grounds of a hotel, this park offers stunning vistas and uncrowded trails.
Took the pup on a great hike on the Minnewaska lake trail. It's a nice trail, a bit crowded, but with super friendly people, dog friendly, and nice easy elevation. If you're looking for a strenuous hike, this is not it, but there's plenty of trails that may have a more hefty hike feel.

Available to view Mon - Fri by appointment. Please call the gallery. At over 3,000 square feet, DM Weil Gallery may be one of the largest modern art galleries in New York's Hudson Valley. Just a short drive from the center of picturesque New Paltz, DM Weil Gallery offers the look and vibe of an exclusive Soho style exhibition space, but with the majestic Shawangunk mountains as a backdrop. The eye-popping abstract creations of acclaimed painter DM Weil -- has been praised by critics and collectors alike, the gallery's mission statement remains, "Why Can't Fine Art Be Fun?".
My girlfriend and I drove up to New Paltz for the weekend and spent Saturday hiking. Sunday, we explored the town for a while and decided to head up to this gallery as it was so highly rated on TripAdvisor. I can assure you that it is all that its hyped up to be and more. The moment we stepped into the facility, we were floored by all the prints and how knowledgeable and hospitable Ken was (DM Weil's partner). We ended up spending just under an hour looking through the beautiful gallery and we would've stayed longer if we hadn't had time constraints. Afterwards, we got an amazing deal on some prints and we were very happy with our experience. I would recommend to anyone with an interest in art! (It was also remarkably cool and well-kept and we were offered beverages and snacks which was a very nice change from the 90 degree and humid weather!)

Renovated art deco theater showing professional productions of contemporary plays & musicals.
Just saw RED a Tony award winning production that just wrapped up its run at Shadowland Stages (new name for Shadowland Theatre).
You really ought not to miss one of the 5 or 6 summer productions at this venue. The newly renovated space (the entire building) offers amazing productions performed by professional actors. With the opening of their adjunct space and black box theatre down the street the Shadowland will only expand its history of successful productions.
If you are anywhere near Ellenville (located in the middle between Liberty (to the North), Monticello (to the West) and Middletown (to the South East) you really must come. Take advantage of the many restaurants in town before and/or after the show!

I'm not religious but after hiking in the area -- this time to decompress after a trip to Ireland by way of Sam's Point -- this was a perfect place to just sit for and hour and sort memories -- not only of my hike, but my trip as well.
Beautiful.

Learned about the Sundown Wild Forest through the Internet. Was trying to find a place to camp primitively with the family.
Got a recommendation from a Ranger to try the Kanape brook and so I went on my way. The ride is about 2 1/2 hours from Queens, NY. After passing Boiceville the cellular reception was lost and it was a good thing we brought walkie-talkies with us. Once at the parking lot where the Kanape brook trail starts, we started our hike without noticing there was a bridge to the trail... So we did it the old fashion way: we went in the water, over the mountain and when we were about to start protesting someone yelled "bridge to your left!" Lol we all laughed so much that our bellies hurt. We hiked for 4 hours and the views, the landscape, the slopes, everything was very beautiful. The brook itself doesn't carry a lot of water, but there were pools of water every often where the teens will jump to refresh themselves. We only found one campsite marked but it was rather small for our large group. Because it was our first time on that endeavor, we went back to our vehicles and tried the more known lower and middle field campgrounds.
Even though we didn't complete the hike, everyone in the group was really happy and grateful for the experience.
I recommend this hike for family with teens, but I even went with my 4yr old and she was just fine (well I had to carry her on the way back).
Remember there is no cellular signal, so, bring your two-way radios with you. We were using common brand radios and two hours into the trail we were able to communicate with the people we left at the parking lot. Also, very important, bring water and hiking shoes, other sport shoes might work but I strongly recommend against due to the loose rocks along the trail and the slippery rocks inside the brook.
Very important: download and get familiar with the rules for camping/hiking With the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The forest is fragile and we would like them to be available for generations to come. Learn about the camping permit (permits are free) requirements and if you need a permit get one; Rangers are very serious about their work, patrol the trails and campsites every day and won't hesitate to issue a violation specially if they think you are acting recklessly or trying to break/bend the rules.
I will write about the lower and middle field campgrounds on a different review.
Thanks for reading!
