Elazığ (Turkish pronunciation: [eˈlazɯː]) ) is a city in Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, and the administrative center of Elazığ Province. It is located in the uppermost Euphrates valley. The plain on which the city extends has an altitude of 1067 metres. Elazığ resembles an inland peninsula surrounded by the natural Lake Hazar and reservoirs of Keban Dam, Karakaya Dam, Kıralkızı and Özlüce.

The castle is situated in old city with the same name Harput which is like a mini town or small village with old buildings, ruins, and local houses both old and new. It is nice also to walk around Harput to get the feeling being in local Turkish village. Note that I visited in early March 2021 when the covid restriction was just being loosened up so it is possible, for example, to eat in restaurant, thus it was quiet and not many people around. Walking to the castle (about 1 km from Ensar Mangal Vadisi - famous restaurant in Elaziğ) we passed by Ulu Camii with Pisa-style minaret, I can say it was worthy. The castle was built, surprisingly, by the Urartian and accupied by Byzantiums and Ottomans too. The archaeological works inside the castle were going on. From the castle we could enjoy the surrounding beautiful view.
