While the Shenandoah Museum is large spanning north & south of the valley, this museum is more local communities such as Harrisburg, Dayton, Rockingham and Bridgewater. However small doesn't mean a visit isn't in the cards, for the area exhibits are very detailed, varied & unexpected. A visit starts in a small theater with a 17-18 minute video with Confederate Gen. Thomas Jackson's 1862 Valley Campaign demonstrated with a lighted map of the valley-red for the south & blue for the union forces advancing & retreating-showing all tons/villages where battles were fought. The main museum is located on a lower level with lighting that comes on as a visitor advances into the room. A visitor will first encounter union general Philip Sheridan's thirteen days of destroying the Shenandoah Valley's breadbasket, with each day very detailed. This leads to the Shenandoah Valley Folk Art Collection that includes stoneware, the Invincible History Spirit of the Shenandoah from 14,000 BC to 1600 AD, Early Valley Life, German floor plans & an excellent exhibit of pottery, a replica furnace pottery maker & textiles. Other exhibits are an 1820's school room, newspaper & printing press, public school integration, higher education & the Shenandoah Central Railroad. One exhibit to view is the Allan Litter of the Valley Observer that includes twenty three photos of historic events of nearby Harrisburg. My visit probably lasted a hour & half, which included the theater, photography & much reading. With lights coming on intl each new section excellent light for photography. Restrooms are located just a short distance from the stairs leading to the lower museum. The woman-didn't get her name-who greeted my arrival was very helpful, able to answer all my questions & friendly. Admission is $8.00 & $9.00 with a senior getting the lower rate. Parking is a small/medium gravel lot. Only two other visitors during my visit. If a person has an interest of what life was like from the early 1800's up to the 1920's/30's in rural mid-Virginia off I-81, this museum will not disappoint. As some reviewers have used the word "GEM", the museum is al that. The museum is located 10-12 minutes-by GPS-from I-81. A visit for any length of time is recommended.

The Silver Lake Mill gift shop features a fun and eclectic selection of items from local artisans and makers, as well as seconds and overruns of the products that Silver Lake Workshops makes in the upper floors of the Mill. (More on that below.) Check out a wide variety of things you didn't know you needed until you saw them, including items for your home, jewelry and other wearables, local food and music, and more! We'll even open the water gate so you see the mill wheel and gears turning. On days when the Silver Lake Workshops are open, come upstairs for a free, self-guided tour and see our artisans making items for customers such as the museum shops at George Washington's Mount Vernon, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Colonial Williamsburg. Maybe we can make a gift item or memento for your business, church, or historical attraction!
This old mill is a really cute gift shop. The prices are great, and the scenery around it is very nice. If your are in Dayton, it is worth seeing.

This is simply to most fun I have had in a quilt shop! There is fabric galore and beautiful kits everywhere. So whether you already have a project in mind or not, you will be sure to leave with one or two. The ladies who work there are fun, friendly and helpful. They offer classes, sewing machine, long arms, embroidery, batting, notions and anything else you could want. They even have some things you didn’t know you wanted. Everything about Patchwork Plus makes me happy. ????
