Dalkey (/ˈdɔːkiː/; Irish: Deilginis, meaning "thorn island") is one of the most affluent suburbs of Dublin, and a seaside resort southeast of the city, and the town of Dun Laoghaire, in Ireland. It was founded as a Viking settlement and became an active port during the Middle Ages. According to chronicler John Clyn (c.1286–c.1349), it was one of the ports through which the plague entered Ireland in the mid-14th century. In modern times, Dalkey has become a seaside suburb that attracts some tourist visitors. It has been home to writers and celebrities including Jane Emily Herbert, Maeve Binchy, Hugh Leonard, Bono, Van Morrison and Enya. The village and broader area lie within the jurisdiction of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

Mornington Gardens offers a really enjoyable and interesting tour of attractive natural Gardens. Annmarie, whose family Gardens these are, met and guided us around the Gardens many plants, flowers, shrubs and trees, native and from overseas, in a very natural setting on the Gardens' grounds. Annmarie is a trained Horticulturist and gives outdoor classes Thursdays and Saturdays at this location. Her excellent teaching skills were appreciated as she moved adeptly from section to section, allowing us to absorb and take in what was on view. Although initially designed back in 1935, Annmarie has plans in place to ensure the Gardens will continue to develop and grow in their natural beauty. Annmarie welcomed questions and this encouraged us as beginner gardeners - it was much appreciated. The Gardens by the way are listed in the BBC Gardeners' TV series visitors guidebook 'Gardens of UK/Ireland" (available on line). There are swings for children to play on - lovely Rooster and Chickens to admire as they strut about near the end of the tour. It is a happy, lovely place for families. The gardens are easy to walk around; regular footware is fine. Great tour-thank you Annmarie. Garden lovers from Everywhere - Come Visit!

A very nice person, who will tell you about the history off Dalkey island... and more :-) For 8.00€ he will bring you to the little island and will come and get you when you are ready. Just go and stand on the concrete stairs, enjoy the seals and wave at him ;-)

We took a kayak tour out to the island. It was a beautiful sunny morning when we were there so we got some amazing views back over Dublin from the island. The island itself is great to visit as well as you are only joined with a couple of other people and the goats and rabbits that live on the island. Well worth seeing.

Very original feel to this little harbour that’s overlooked by Bullock Castle. Boat rental available. Saw some seals in the harbour the other night.

Sits on an elevated position on Harbour Road in Dalkey. Nice memorial garden inside the grounds. Striking bell tower.
