Crescent City (Chetco-Tolowa: Taa-’at-dvn, Yurok: Kohpey, Wiyot: Daluwagh ) is the county seat of, and only incorporated city in, Del Norte County, California. Named for the crescent-shaped stretch of sandy beach south of the city, Crescent City had a total population of 7,643 in the 2010 census, up from 4,006 in the 2000 census. The population includes inmates at Pelican Bay State Prison, also within the city limits, and the former census-designated place Crescent City North annexed to the city. The city is also the site of the Redwood National Park headquarters, as well as the historic Battery Point Light. Due to the richness of the local Pacific Ocean waters and the related catch, and ease of access, Crescent City Harbor serves as home port for numerous commercial fishing vessels.

This group of large redwood trees an easily be seen by walking a fairly easy 1 mile loop trail thru the grove. There are rest rooms in the parking lot. Auto access is by one of the scenic drives in Jedediah Smith State Park.

Part of the Redwoods National and State Parks system, this state park was established in 1929.
A walk through a forest is one of the best things you can do for yourself, a walk through this forest sets your heart at ease. What a wonderful sight to wander through the underbrush and have the tree trunks surround you.

The drive takes approx. 45 minutes...lots longer if you stop as often as we did to take photographs and just stand in awe at the beautiful trees. Narrow road, some paved, some gravel. Do not need 4 wheel drive but RV's are a no no. This is part of history that one day will be no more. I loved the drive and it is a definite MUST SEE!!! It is so worth the time. I can not say enough about how beautiful and awe inspiring this is.

Museum that houses many artifacts and documents related to local history.
We took a quick detour off the 101 to see the Battery Point Lighthouse. This small lighthouse is located on a small peninsula that can become an island during high tide. As it was low tide we took the short walk, past the piles of driftwood, over the sand and gravel, and up the path past the keepers cottage and on to the point. Being a bit early, the winter season, and a private residence the lighthouse wasn't open to the public when we were there. That didn't dampen the experience. We had wonderful views and were surprised to see a couple of California Gray Whales in close to the rocks below the point. A wonderful detour off the 101.

A coastal state park which offers tours to a nearby lighthouse.
The beach stretches for several miles along US 101 south of the city and is popular with people who come to surf, stick their feet in the water let their dogs get some fresh air and walk the beach looking for interesting articles, particularly sand dollar skeletons. As the rock from which the sand came, it is dark in color, but not totally black. It is fine grained with some stones of larger sizes in small numbers. At one point a stream runs from inland through the sand but it is very shallow and easy to cross. At several points motels are right on the shore, but they are small and don't take away anything from the beautiful views and sound of the surf.

We are from the west coast of Florida and have our own gorgeous views, but this was so awesome to see on the left coast. Soothing to the soul, and gives you someplace to unwind on vacation.

We were at a horrible motel and wanted to get out for a bit. We stopped by this beautiful little park to just sit and reminisce about our long road trip and would you believe there were locals and they were smoking cigarettes and doing other narcotics. This area is not safe for anyone, much less children in the later afternoon.

This is the manufacturing plant for Rumiano Cheese Company. California's oldest family owned cheese manufacturer. The retail shop has a viewing window, if you get there early enough you'll be able see them make some cheese! Unfortunately we do not offer tours. We're sorry for the inconvenience.
I like to buy local when I can, as I'm traveling. I always look for the special things local communities have, and seek them out. It is a great way of meeting people, tasting local food and drink, and just having a good time. I saw Rumiano Cheese at Murphy's store in Trinidad, and a guy talked about how good their butter was, so I wanted to visit this place in Crescent City. Wow! A huge variety of cheeses, plus other local products. We walked out with about 6 pounds of this and that at less than $20. You could spend a lot more, for sure, but they have a whole cooler of sale cheese at about $2.50-3.50/lb. for their locally-produced cheese. Have you seen any kind of cheese at those prices lately? So many kinds of cheese, lots of samples, and then sausages by other local producers, and much more. A big selection, great prices, and it is all local. Wish I could bring this store home with me!

We visited the museum and spent over an hour, walking from room to room, up the stairs and down, inspecting the numerous exhibits. There is a good Native American section on the Tolowas and Klamath. Most of the other exhibits feature early white settlers and the founders of the town, for whom many landmarks are named. There is a gift shop with some books for sale too. The staff are helpful and informative. A small admission fee is charged.
