Chongming District ( pronunciation (help·info)) is northernmost district of the provincial-level municipality of Shanghai in China. Chongming consists of three low-lying inhabited alluvial islands at the mouth of the Yangtze north of the Shanghai peninsula: Chongming, Changxing, and Hengsha. Following its massive expansion in the 20th century, Chongming is now the 2nd-largest island administered by the People's Republic of China and the 3rd-largest in Greater China, after Taiwan and Hainan. Chongming does not, however, administer all of the Chongming: owing to its continual expansion from sediment deposited by the Yangtze, it has merged with formerly separate islands and now includes Jiangsu province's pene-exclave townships of Haiyong and Qilong. Chongming proper covers an area of 1,411 kilometers (877 mi) and had a population of 704 000 at the time of the 2010 Chinese census.

Nice area to visit. Poor for cycling, as there are too many cars around at the streets. Big parking lot, but Some selfish and grasping drivers block the roads by illegal parking, which causes huge ttraffic jams at peak times.

I regret to say I have not been here earlier. This is so green, so quiet, and yet so close to Shanghai. You can hire bikes and drive around. There are activities to be done (karting, paintball shooting, bumper cars, boats) but you might ad well just enjoy the tranquility and the beautifull nature. It is a pity it is not easy to get there from Shanghai center without car (on the other hand that means also of course it is not terribly crowded).

The island of Chongming offers China's only wetland park and a migratory bird reserve. Raised boardwalks provide the opportunity for exploring the marshlands by foot or bicycle.
The wetlands with the songs of so many birds was exceptional, a special day of rural serenity only an hour from the city frenzy of Shanghai...highly recommended for lovers of nature.

Situated on Chongming Island, the Mahota Farm is a sustainable establishment with a focus on symbiosis. The Farm has a total land area of 43 hectares, with 28 hectares devoted to agronomic and horticultural crops. Waste to resource management facilities like waste lagoons, wetlands, and the wildlife sanctuary occupy 8 hectares of land.
Mahota runs other resorts throughout Asia. Uniquely, this one truly highlights eco-tourism and learning about how healthy organic farms produce veggies year-round, as well as eggs. They also relate this to personal health, serving extremely healthy foods. I traveled there as a scholar, and during the off-season. It was a highly satisfying adventure for me. Indeed, just seeing the bridge to Chongming Island and the island are very worthwhile. At Mahota, the sustainable architecture is very attractive, just as the farm fields are immaculately neat. I was able to get a bicycle to travel over the extensive farm area, and nearby. On the farm, there are signs everywhere in Chinese and English to explain what you're looking at. Elsewhere on Chongming there is no English not even very many street signs. In terms of staying overnight, it is an option and reasonable. Healthy meals are included. I was able to stay in one of their yurts overnight, and it was modest but quite comfortable even on a chilly night, and there was even reliable wi-fi. Only a handful of the staff here speak any English, but I still managed. You really do need a car to get there. But if you can arrange for the ride, it's worth a day visit and even staying overnight.

In order to get away from the crowds and enjoy some fresh air, this place is recommended with 1.5 hours drive away from Shanghai. The drive is a comfortable and relaxing all the way.
This place is on a swampy area on Chongming Island. Lots of swamps, green, flowers, and fresh air. Have a go.

Book a trip to Chongming Island, China's third largest, with a tremendous wetlands area...known as the East Bund Wetlands. Best seen in the spring or fall because it is too cold in the winter with few birds, and too hot and crowded in the summer. Bring a pair of binoculars if you are into birds...there are many species to be seen, including beautiful white cranes.

We loved the tour on the very reasonably priced bikes, double and single bikes available at a fraction of the price that they charge at the Hyatt. The light rain kept it quiet and a picnic would be nice out there. The goats, swans and geese are quite happy and you can buy them food at the shack up the path. Very relaxing, as the bike traffic was so much easier than the highway traffic to reach the island. Plan ahead and have a fun weekend!
