Algar Seco

Reviewed By KathleenR_28 - Port Dover, Canada

What a stunning place this is! I started my hike from the church and worked my way eastwards using the boardwalk. The scenery is just breathtaking! I took my time going down closer to the water by using the carved steps on the rocks (in many places, you have to watch your steps and make sure you put your foot down on rocks that are not slimy). Lots of natural windows facing the ocean ... just spectacular! By the way, do not attempt to walk down if you are wearing sandals or slippers ... I saw one lady almost fall because she was wearing flimsy sandals. She had to walk barefoot on the rocks because she wanted to go where I went. Also make it a point to go to A Boneca ... there is a small entrance way under the rock and, again, two naturally formed windows facing the ocean. Without a doubt, Algarve is a magical place!

Carvalho Beach

Reviewed By Roots2Wings - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Another amazing horsehoe-shaped beach in southern Portugal. Its golden sand looks at the Ocean on one side & is completely walled by the sandstone sea cliffs on the other side (actually 3 sides), making it one of the Algarve's best candid-hidden popular beaches. There is free parking on the top (till where your map takes you) & then you need to climb down a long staircase. When you reach a small flat area, there are 2 entries, completely hidden from the top, like a bog hole dug in the sandstone, which has another staircase but this time, carved in the cliff itself. Once you reach the bottom, you are in this amazing "pocket beach" to enjoy time away from the crown, enjoy your beachwear, hide from the sun or get a tan. Mind that there are no toilets, changing room or public showers. The only shop is at the parking level, which is a truck shop selling some basics & fresh juice. Time it well, so that you can get some Sun.

Vale de Centeanes Beach

Reviewed By jqdickson - Leeds, United Kingdom

This beach is fantastic. Beautiful beach surrounded by high cliffs. The sand is so clean and pure. The sea is quite rough, so you need to be very careful if you have young children with you. There a number of steps down to the beach, so if you have difficultly walking you will struggle to access this beach

Praia do Carvoeiro

Reviewed By M666RAN - Leeds, United Kingdom

Our prevoius stay in Carvoeiro was twenty years ago and whilst it was very nice, it was nothing like it is today. Today ther are more restaurants that you couls ever need, same goes for the bars, The main square is the focal point and during the summer months there is live entertaiment every night until around 11pm. The square is surrounded by restaurants and bars and is vehicle free so the kids can run round. The beach isn't too big and it can get quite busy in the summer but there are plenty of other beaches around within travelling distance. What used to be local fishing fleet now seems to to have transformed into a fleet of boats taking visitors to the caves, As always in Portugal, the locals are all very friendly and helpful

Farol de Alfanzina/Alfanzina lighthouse

Reviewed By Stuart_Away_Again - Cambridge, United Kingdom

Well you would expect a lighthouse to be in a prominent location and this one is just that. Unparalleled views to the east and west and a useful landmark for the coastal paths in both directions. We did get into the lighthouse and to honest you need to be a lighthouse efficionardo to get the maximum benefit. However, at 98 years old there is enough history and engineering to amuse even the most sceptical of visitors. Manned by enthusiastic volunteers they tour lasts about 20 mins up the stairs, see the light, go outside for the view and then back down again. It’s not Disney but it’s a glimpse into the world of operational light houses which is unusual.

A Boneca

Reviewed By ReviewerII - Chalfont St Peter, United Kingdom

We came here again after great experiences and were not disappointed. It's a lovely way to spend an evening, easy walking from carvoeiro, beautiful sunset en route, quirky and unique location, food is good at worst and great at best. Anything you can grill really. I found all the staff to be great once again this year, they are all young and I think work well in a very busy environment, they cope great. The cave and rocks are fun for kids and adults alike. I think it's a special place, when all things are considered. Nice walk back to carveiro, little dance in the square, kids and adults all happy! Whats not to like! You must book in the evenings or you'll have a long wait or a wasted walk.
