If you enjoy a lovely level walk along a beautiful river, this is the hike for you! It's shady on a hot day & you can easily walk up one side & then after about 3 mile cross over & the return trip is just as lovely.

Eighty-two-mile scenic byway offering the best foliage in the state.
We did the McKenzie Pass route out of Sisters on our way to Florence. Though the smoke from wildfires was evident, the view of the Three Sisters was still amazing. Our first stop was the Dee Wright Observatory that offered a panoramic of the Cascades and the lava field. There is an a path into the lava field with many informational signs that should not be passed up. Continuing on we enjoyed the view from Belknap Viewpoint. The last stop before we exited the loop was Proxy Falls where we hike a part of the trail, but my knees started to give out so we never reached the falls.

Surrounded by a huge lava flow, the Dee Wright Observatory was constructed in 1935 by Civilian Conservation from lava rocks. It is an observatory to view the Cascade peaks from the summit of McKenzie Pass - where you can see the three Sisters, Mount Washington, Mount Jefferson and on clear day, Mount Hood. Route 242 is closed during the winter and opens to automobiles in the spring when snow removal is complete. A great way to see the Cascade peaks in the spring is by cycling route 242 to the observatory in the weeks leading up to the opening when you can go by bicycle but not by automobile. It's a stunning, easy ride from Sisters without any traffic. So if you are in Central Oregon in the spring I highly recommend this beautiful and scenic ride.

Been driving down 97 for 50 years and did not realize that this historic water fall on the Deschutes River was even there. It is a few miles off of 97 at the Crooked River Ranch exit and is managed by the BLM. A half-mile trail takes you along the river to the falls and remains of an old fish ladder preceding the days of Wanapum Dam. Beautiful setting and nice walk.

I had the pleasure to visit these 2 falls during a weekend visit to the area. The walk is short. Only about 2 miles but the 2 waterfalls were great. The river runs right by the path so you can get up close and personal. Great pictures as well. It is also a free parking area. A must if your in the area. Just be aware there is no cell service there.

We always park at the fish hatchery and start the easy trail along the Metolius River for just over 2.4 miles to the water falls from the side of the mountain, return back to the hatchery and then walk through the grounds to see the various sizes of fish in the outdoor tanks. This time we got to talk with some fish and wildlife staff who were working to mark the tiny 4-5 inch fish so that when they were released and came up against a nearby dam, they were easily noted by the dam staff and "helped" to cross through the dam to where they needed to go. It was fascinating to see what they were doing to allow these spring salmon to actually thrive in the environment with a little help of people!

Had a delightful visit at the Crescent Moon Ranch. Owner is a very friendly and accommodating host, and his animals are delightful! We had a great visit as a rest stop on a drive from Bend to Portland. Families with children will love this place, free, small price for "food," some very nice gifts but the Ranch and animals are a real treat for all ages!

We have done some houseboating at Lake Billy Chinook several times over the years. It's always amazing. Beautiful views and landscape. Fun place for water sports.
