Messina Hof Winery

Founded on the cornerstones of family, tradition and romance, Messina Hof Winery & Resort has held its place as a Brazos Valley staple since its founding in 1977. It is the estate winery where the Messina Hof winemaking team crafts our world-class wines. Messina Hof had humble beginnings as founders, Paul Vincent and Merrill Bonarrigo ran the lab, tastings, etc right out of their living room. Our current Tasting Room, also known as the Guest Center, was the rebuilt home that wa originally the Ursuline Academy, which was an all girls school. The original brick from the home was used to build the Tasting Room that guests can still see today.

With friends we had a wonderful one night stay at the winery enjoying the complimentary wine tasting and tour. The Romeo and Juliet room was spacious, unique and quiet. Doug gave us a thorough and entertaining tour of the winery and recommended Christopher's Grille for dinner which turned out to be exceptional. Paul, the enthusiastic owner and general overall promoter of the Texas wine industry, visited with us for a while and we learned even more. Jean presented a friendly and delicious breakfast which included crepes. The entire experience was genuinely Texas and comparable to any we experienced n Bordeaux.

My husband and I toured Bell County Museum on a Saturday afternoon. The museum is free, small (or big for a small town), not crowded, very interesting and located about 1 block north of the courthouse. The museum focuses on Bell County history. The staff was helpful as well. There is a donation box at the entrance/exit and was worth a donation. The museum is certainly worth at least a 30 minute visit.

If you're lucky enough to happen upon this particular one of the Painted Churches while the music director is rehearsing for weekly mass, you'll feel like you're in heaven! We could've spent all day listening to her sing while we explored the church. What a beautiful place. I think this is my favorite of all the Painted Churches because it has such a friendly and welcoming environment. I wish we lived close enough to attend weekly mass here!

I wouldn't recommend this museum for toddlers, but children as young as 5 up to middle school would like it. There are a number of old trains outside to walk through and explore. There is also a playground when the kids get tired of viewing the exhibits.

I35 is under construction, so the usual exit 301 is closed. If you are driving north from Austin, use exit 300 and follow the access road to Central Ave. If you are driving south from Dallas/Waco, use exit 302 (Nugent) and follow the signs to cross the bridge to Central Ave. It is a BIG mess. My GPS still routed me via exit 301, so be sure to visit their website to get the latest construction information.

Costs about $20 a person to get in which isn't bad. The treats for the animal are not expensive for how much you get. The kids loved it and it's definitely worth a visit, just not as many animals as a regular zoo. Staff isn't the friendliest, but you go for the animals right? Overall fun trip and we stopped at Blue Bell on the way home. Nice day trip to get out of the house during the summer

Awesome microbrewery right off 35. The building is a restored grain mill with the original ship lap and a modern garage door spiffs up the design. The beers were unique and tasty. There's picnic tables set up inside and out on the patio. Cornhole is available on request. We were there on a Sunday afternoon, but it looks like there food trucks every Friday and Saturday and music on Thursday's. The bartenders was knowledgeable and friendly. We will definitely be back.

Camp Hearne

Camp Hearne Historic Site was the location of a WWII prisoner-of-war internment camp that housed 4800 German Prisoners during WWII. Yes, right here in Central Texas...a far sight from the fighting. Our exhibits explains the why and how of this story. Our tour takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on the group dynamics. It includes a 16-17 minute video. Our exhibit includes artifacts from the archeological survey, prisoner artwork and many objects related to Camp Hearne’s U.S. Army – POW – Local experience during WWII. Certainly, we have some visitors that spend the day. It just depends on your level of interest. There are trails in wooded areas that lead back to some relics of prisoner-built theater and fountains they created to pass the time. These would require walking 1-1.5 miles if you visited all three.

This POW Camp is a must see. The female working that day gave us one of the most informative tours we ever had...sorry I don't have her name. This camp housed POWs from all three Axis powers from WWII. The story of their lives there is extremely interesting. A recent dig on site found many interesting objects, which are on display.

Kissing Tree Vineyards

We went on a Sunday for the brunch, having tried their wines the previous day at the Waco Farmers Market. The winery is in an old downtown building, nicely restored indoors and with an attractive courtyard in back shaded by pecan trees. The building is at the intersection of 3rd St. and I-35, so in the outdoor seating there is a little more interstate traffic noise than I would have liked, but it was still quite pleasant. The brunch had three items on the menu, although one was sold out already. They have mimosas and sangria available for the brunch in addition to the regular wines. We had a goat cheese strata that was very good. The portions are large and it it was tasty although a little more cheese on top than I would do. The proprietor was very pleasant and the chef came around to chat during the meal. We're looking forward to going back for their Friday/Saturday night Italian dinners.

Texas Beer Company

Reviewed By Taintpretty - Austin, Texas

Relatively new brewery and is was amazing at how much nicer their tap room is over .ROmany in Austin. Some impressive metal work to add to the decor along with nice art on the walls make this a stand-out.

Along with their own beers on tap they also source other local brews. I was pleased to find Pinthouse Pizza Double IPA on tap here. Only two of their own beers were on tap but the stout was really nice as was the IPA. Their own beers are only $4-$4.50 (this should be standard price for all in-house taps).

The have a stage and live music on weekends. The staff was friendly and we even left with two shirts liking their logo. Even the restrooms were really nice. We'll be back with friends soon.

They do stock a variety of games or for those wanting to let their competitive side come out. A nice ping pong table as well so good for kids. Plenty of TVs for watching sports.

They did have Davis bbq being sold while we were there. 2 star rating due to high rubber content of the brisket sandwich. Pales in comparison what you can find in Taylor Cafe or Mueller's (top shelf!).
