Battenkill Valley Outdoors

BVO set us up for a wonderfully relaxing trip down the Battenkill River. The staff provided us with both a dry bag to carry our refreshments and a pelican case for our phone. We were shuttled to the Put-in site with our tubes and set adrift on the meandering river. This was the perfect lazy river for a very hot summer day. Water temps in the 70s, air temps at least 85. We were never sweating or shivering. The staff with a van was waiting for us at the take-out location (the phone was to call them if they weren't waiting). Adventure start to finish was 3.5 hours with less than 15 minutes of the logistics of getting going. The staff was friendly, very helpful and informative about what to expect. We thought about going back the next day and stocking a third tube with food and drink to last us for a longer relax! BVO was $8 a person cheaper than a competitor farther south, and they are way more enthusiastic about answering our questions and making sure we were going to enjoy ourselves.

Stopped by after a great meal at Sweet Beet Bistro which happens to serve Argyle brew.
We had the "rough and ready" and "cute little blonde". Both outstanding. Wife loved the black currant cider.
Purchased a growler of rough and ready to go and a bottle of black currant. The cider is not made here but is a local product. Wife loves it and she happens to be a cute little blonde. A bottle of the black currant makes her rough and ready..
It was a great day..
All kidding aside, this place is outstanding. Friendly and very knowledgable about their product. On this day pizza was ordered and served to the standing room only crowd free of charge. We were still full from our great dinner at the bistro so we didn't partake..
Worth a trip from anywhere. Beautiful area loaded with nice people.

Sandy Gordon operates an alpaca breeding farm and store here on Route 67 northwest of Bennington, Vermont, just before entering New York State. Sandy will give you a tour of the farm and a lecture on all you ever wanted to know about alpaca breeding. You can meet and pet her cute and curious alpacas, and even kiss the alpha llama, Charlie, who guards the alpacas. After seeing and hearing about alpacas, you can buy beautiful alpaca fiber clothing from the animals you just met! Hard to resist! This is a hidden gem off the road, but look for the sign as you leave Bennington. Sandy will greet you and make it an interesting experience!

Argyle Brewing Company

Reviewed By Roger K - Clifton Park, NY

If you’ve been to the Argyle Brewery in Greenwich, then you’ll really appreciate the location of their second tasting room in the old Cambridge train station. Not only is it more roomy, it is also very pleasing, architecturally. Sit and drink outside at a picnic table under the train-riders canopy, or enjoy your choice of brews inside the station under the chandeliers, totally surrounded by the natural wood, tongue and groove walls and ceiling. Make that HIGH ceilings!

We stopped in on a Friday evening and there was a food vender setting up outside. Since we were on our way to dinner in Greenwich, we simply ordered flights – four 4 oz. tastings ($6). Between the two of us, we were able to try all eight of the available offerings. My wife especially liked the 5KIPA (7.2% abv), but also enjoyed the Hop To It IPA (5.5% abv) and the Rough & Ready Red No. 2 (4.2% abv). My favorite was the Oatmeal Stout (4.6% abv), but I was surprisingly pleased enough with the Cute Little Blond (4.4% abv) that when I had the option of ordering a pint of it at dinner in Greenwich, I did so.

There were also some guest taps that we sampled. I really liked the Shandy (3.9% abv) from Woodland Farm Brewery in Utica. A Black Current Cider (6.9% abv) from Slyboro Ciderhouse in Granville looked like, but was not as tart as, a lambic. And finally, the Saratoga Cider (6.9% abv) from the nearby Saratoga Apple in Schuylerville was dry and full of apple flavor from thirteen different varieties.

No matter which of the Argyle Brewery tasting rooms you go to, you’re sure to be greeted by friendly knowledgeable staff and treated to some really tasty brews. Remember to bring your growler too.

The Girl/Boy scouts rented Willard Mountain for a night of tubing. Everyone from little kids to the adults had a great time. The staff was very friendly and made sure the warming stations, inside and out, were always stoked. They even made Smores! A special shout out for the two gentleman and one gal that were pushing the tubes to start them up top. They went above and beyond to make sure we all had "a sweet ride" !! Judging by the treatment we received, I feel that the service would be the same no matter when you went.

Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site

I was born and raised in the area - left 30 years ago, the park was always such a treasure remember great memories of church picnics and other outings, so sad to see how the over all condition of the park has gone down hill. Roads, hedgerows are over grown, flagpole has broken off over the years and been reduced to half the height. Very sad, however it is still a national landmark, worth the trip to understand the history.

You can rent kayaks, canoes or tubes. There are 1.5 hour trips, 3.5 hour trips, 4.5 hour trips. They load your gear and bring you up the river and drop you and you make your way back to the campground take-out point. The ride down the Battenkill River is the most scenic area we have kayaked. Beautiful beyond words. However, when the water is low, there are several parts where you will get stuck and have to get out and move your kayak. The property also has RV sites and tent sites, however, the help has a hard time with reservations and ours were messed up 2 out of 3 times this summer. They need to re-number the sites and come up with a better reservation system. You don't need to stay at the campground to kayak/canoe/tube. You can just do a day trip. We keep coming back, so overall I recommend it.

Hathaway's Drive In is old fashioned family fun. The drive in shows a double or triple feature, depending upon the time of year. The drive in is immaculately maintained. The views from every space are outstanding as the hills are extra steep. The snack bar is great and has an endless bucket of fresh and delicious popcorn. The drive in was near capacity, but everyone was extremely well behaved and noise was never a problem. It is a relaxing family friendly environment. We live 200 miles away, but we will definitely be back. It's a short ride from nearby Bennington, Vermont.

We found Kimberly farms almost by accident as it is a bit hidden off route 7a. We stopped by for horseback riding for the next day but they were sold out. The owner invited us to come back for horse club instead. The horse club gives kids and parents an opportunity to learn about horses by petting, grooming and feeding them for the first hour and then riding them a bit in the second hour. The horses that are part of horse club have been rescued and are extremely well cared for. Volunteers give them lots of love. There are over 15 horses here and the horseback riding trails have views of 3 states we are told. The views from the farm are breathtaking. I was impressed by the caring volunteers and the lovely horses and farm. Next time we'll call ahead to reserve horseback riding as they are open year round.
