We had a nice gathering of friends at the chalet at the top of the sledding hills. The place is not fancy, but was warm on a day when temperature was in the teens. Folks had reserved the second floor , where there is a little cafe run by a nice lady—you can buy simple foods. Sodas, warm beverages, etc. Our hosts had brought pizza and treats, which is also allowed. The kids had a blast on the well groomed hills. This is a great place!

There is something really special about this area. We had been once before, and years later took our two young boys, 3 and 5. We spent days just enjoying the surroundings. Collected rocks in Eagle River along Superior, had ice cream on the porch of the little store there, explored rock piles and forests. Learned about copper mining in Calumet and poked around at the old equipment. Everything was just so peaceful. The sky seems so expansive and the clouds so big. Next summer we have another list of things to see in the area, but I am mainly looking forward to just being there.

The Keweenaw National Historical Park is an incredible array of buildings, ruins, industrial sites, and abandoned mines. The Keweenaw is dripping with history and it's great that the National Park Service is dedicating resources to preserve and restore unique sites. Their Visitor Center in the old Masonic Temple building in Calumet has lots of cool exhibits and is a great introduction to the historical sites on Keweenaw Peninsula.
