On our way to Bar Harbor, we stopped to view the Penobscot Narrows Observatory and bridge. We had a very good view of the bridge and the Penobscot River and Bay that it crossed. We were also able to enjoy the autumn foliage and sear rock cliffs. The observatory is the tallest public bridge observatory in the world.

The walk along the river front is peaceful and relaxing with gorgeous views and a lovely waterfall. Photographers will enjoy the opportunity to capture the Waldo-Hancock suspension bridge and Fort Knox not to mention the lovely river and bay. Take a picnic and enjoy a leisurely lunch or a morning coffee!

You enter the state park and pay a fee on the honor system. There are a few trails that lead to wooded picnic areas. Would not recommend as it was a bit overgrown and buggy. A few tables are a bit better to the left of the privately owned lighthouse. You can walk around it to take pics. There is an old bell house that was rung once upon a time to alert during fog. There are actually better lighthouses in Maine. Only go if you are in the area as we were staying in Searsport You will also see the foundation of the old small fort. The best part of the park is the pretty little beach taking a trail down to the far left of the lighthouse. Not any sea glass but a nice place to set up chairs and have your picnic there. No trash cans anywhere so take it all with you when you depart. There is also a pier further down that at times seals have been spotted. Did not see any this time.

I preferred exploring Fort Knox to the bridge observatory by miles. It was really interesting and expansive! Plus, it was decorated for the Halloween haunted house that they do so it was extra creepy with all of the decorations. Really great place to explore and so affordable that you might as well!

Ah the legend of Col. Jon Buck! If you've got kids, this is an especially nice stop. Clearly see the witch's leg (or Jon's Boot) on the side of the monument. There is a plaque beside explaining the legends details. You can park in the supermarket across the street and use the pedestrian crosswalk to traverse Rte. 1 to the cemetery.

A must visit if you are traveling through. Best part is they ship! Dan and Debbie know their teas and blend a lot of different varieties. Love their selection of tea paraphernalia whether for yourself or looking for a unique gift idea.

Trust Wildlands cover small mountains, lakes, streams, forests with miles of trails for hiking, gentle walks, xc skiing, some for horseback and bikes, paddling waterways. Views from the granite top of Great Pond Mountain encompass Mt. Desert Island (Cadillac etc.), Camden Hills, Katahdin on clear days and maybe Mt. Washington (some question on this one!). Trails are well-marked, maps available at trail heads, the office on Main st., Bucksport, and at Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery (another great attraction on Alamoosook Lake.) Trail access at the hatchery, a marked parking lot on US Rte. 1 between Ellsworth and Orland.

Very knowledgable shop keeper, absolutely stunning stones! The collection of opals were, by far, the most unique I've ever seen and now I am the happy owner of a very special one of a kind! The shopkeeper knew a wealth of lore, too, which was fascinating!
(Rock hounds and gem lovers would spend some time here, average joes would spend less than an hour. Only rock-nerd kind of kids would dig it!)

This new art space occupies a wonderful new space in a redone building on Main St. The view from the inside is just marvelous, overlooking Bucksport Waterfront, the Narrows Bridge and Fort Knox. Inside the walls are covered with excellent Maine art from a collection of local artists. To top it all off, they offer art classes and supplies, too. Fun for the entire family!
