Braine-l'Alleud (Dutch: Eigenbrakel) is a Walloon municipality in the Belgian province of Walloon Brabant, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of Brussels. The Braine-l'Alleud municipality includes the former municipalities of Braine-l'Alleud proper, Ophain-Bois-Seigneur-Isaac, and Lillois-Witterzée. It also includes the hamlet of Sart-Moulin, the inverted name of which inspired Hergé’s Moulinsart castle. The famous Lion of Waterloo where the eponymous battle took place is in the territory of Braine-l'Alleud. Bordering Flanders, the town is home to a minority of Dutch-speakers.

I'm glad to have traveled to Waterloo during my trip to Belgium. To have visited the Memorial Waterloo 1815 as well as the Wellington Museum was a great opportunity to re-learn history. The exhibits, immersive scenery and what they call "multi-sensory" experience and the interactive trail make this memorial museum a must-visit and worth the bus trip from Brussels to Waterloo. I also had the opportunity to go up the Lion's Mound and watch their canon-firing reenactment (I'm not sure if it is a year-round attraction or just for June for the anniversary). If there were more time, I would have loved to visit the other three attractions included in the pass I bought. It included Memorial Waterloo, Musee Wellington, Napoleon's House and Mont St Jean. But if one is short for time, I think the best place is to see the Memorial and Lion's Mound!

Musee de la Ferme d'Hougoumont

This historic farmhouse, the last authentic witness to the battle on 18 June 1815, accommodates a pioneering multimedia installation that tells the story of the “battle within the battle”. The show combines innovation with respect for memory. Hougoumont Farm was the scene of fierce and deadly fighting. It is located in a forward position that protected the Allies’ right flank, and was where Napoleon’s brother sparked off the battle. What was only supposed to be a diversionary manoeuvre at first became the most violent point of the battle. Throughout the day, the French assaults here were furious but in vain. The main building was burned to the ground. The house we see today is in fact the former gardener’s cottage.

The museum part of this site was modern, with audio guide and nice exibitions. The 4d movie was exiting. The mound and panorama a bit older but stil very good. All in all, a very good experience at this interesting place in European history!
