Gyllbergen Naturreservat

Reviewed By OskarL73 - Stockholm, Sweden

What sets Gyllbergen apart is that it’s a great winter cross country skiing destination just over two hours drive from Stockholm. Gyllbergen is on a plateau which means it usually has lots of snow even if the snow conditions in Stockholm and the rest of southern Dalarna are poor. There’s a number of different tracks to choose from with varying degrees of difficulty (ie incline). Nowhere is this true wilderness that you’ll find in the Swedish fens up north or in great forests, the tracks are generally well prepared, on weekends you’ll meet other skiiers, and there are rest cabins dotted about. What is really nice is that there are a number of cabins around which can be used for overnight stays. No running water or electricity of course but usually equipped with a cast iron stove and stocked with firewood.

Travelling from Copenhagen then we have been skiing in several of the skiing resorts in the area - and we prefer Romme. The area is of a good size for a few days of skiing, everything running smoothly from liftcards to restaurants and it is simply just a pleasure to visit. It might not offer sufficient challenge to really experienced skiers, but for danes, then it is great.

Ornasstugan

Ornasstugan is a large medieval timber guesthouse built in the beginning of the 16th Century. It was built by a wealthty man who was part owner of the Falu copper mine. Ornasstugan is the second oldest museum in Sweden, estblished in the 1750s to commemorate the dramatic visit of a young nobleman, Gustav Vasa, who was on the run from the Danish king. Gustav decided to come to Dalarna to seek help to assemble a resistance army to try to wrest control from the Danish who were in power of Sweden. The owner of Ornas promised to help and allowed Gustav to sleep in the guesthouse. However, the owner was more interested in the reward money offered for Gustav´s capture. Gustav had to escape and did so with help from the wife of Ornas, through the toilet. Gustav Vasa would later become the first king of an independent Sweden. The stories of his adventures in Dalarna in 1520 have been told at Ornasstugan for 500 years. Next to the museum is a tasty café and wounderful view of the lake Runn.
