Spread over 15 acres, this iconic estate sits at the banks of the Dedduwa Lake in Bentota. The enchanting retreat and fascinating gardens of Lunuganga was often considered a beautifully crafted experimental ground for Geoffrey Bawa, whose extraordinary work can be seen amidst the many architectural charms across the estate. The estate provides telling insights into the life’s work of this prolific architect. Elements of Italian Renaissance gardens, English landscaping, Japanese garden art, and the water gardens of ancient Sri Lanka come together to form Bawa’s most extravagant creation - a mecca for those passionate about landscape design and architectural history. Every turn and bend in Lunuganga is an interesting experience - with so many exotic plants, trees and views to take in. The house is also adorned with paintings and photographs that is a marvel in its own right.
Geoffrey Bawa, who created Lunuganga, is arguably the best known Sri Lankan architect and known for "tropical modernism." If you love architecture, this is a must see while you are in Sri Lanka (they also rent out rooms here - a marvelous place to stay, I'm sure). The tour is of the grounds only (the interior is reserved for hotel guests only) but is a very informative and satisfying tour, and you catch a glimpse of interiors along the way. We were so happy that we made the time to see this place. The tour was given by a very informed and thoughtful guide who also works at the hotel.

Bentota Beach Hotel, an icon in Sri Lankan architecture and a property with a rich history reconstructed by Bawa’s student, Channa Daswatte is a true tribute to Sri Lanka’s most famed architect Geoffrey Bawa. Standing on the balcony of the Geoffrey Bawa Suite, you see the sea on the right and the Bentota river on the left, and Sripada and the central hills on the far right, all in one view. This view, according to architect Channa Daswatte makes this property the one that links the land and the sea. The ‘new’ Bentota Beach is not merely a recreation or a restoration. The main building of the old hotel has been reconstructed newly, as it was built by Bawa. This showcases Bawa’s wide architectural influences ranging from Bali to ancient Sri Lankan monuments. Inside the hotel has the signature of Geoffrey Bawa and the period it was constructed in, but in a modern and functional representation. The lead architect Channa Daswatte has done an amazing job, not only to archive an iconic construction but also through his brilliance, make it a fresh, modern and functional. It is a museum and treasure trove of art and architecture, that concurrently delivers a guests expectections from a modern luxury hotel.

We went here in the daytime, just got a Tuk tuk to take us. It’s a lovely sea turtle conservation and I hope it stays this way and not become too much of a tourist attraction where money becomes more important. We were happy to donate but I did feel like I was being watched to make sure I did, or to make sure I bought a little something. From what we can see they were doing a good job and they invited us back early evening to help set done baby turtles free into the sea which was just absolutely amazing.

Was taken here by our Tuktuk driver and were really impressed by the wide range of souvenirs at excellent prices. Were able to look around without being hassled by the staff although they were always on hand to help when we needed it.
